"The things I have seen , the things I have done are pretty amazing . I can tell you tales about it , show you volume of pictures , speak on lengths about it but you wont understand . And its not your fault . Beautiful things are hard to understand and even more hard to earn. Unless you are there breathing in all what I had , you wont get it. And such an everlasting impression could only be created by wonderful people around - my trek guide Nanu , cook Jeeta and Trek coordinator Raj mohan . Rightly called as Valley of Gods through alpine meadows, ridges, glacier basins, pine forests and ancient villages will leave you spellbound in its web of magic , will give you 7 days of peace amd tranquility and lifetime of memories . Take this trek in the summers. During this time, I got the opportunity to witness the real beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas after the nature evolved out as fresh as the morning dew. Colourful flowers all around, the new leaves, the quintessential beauty of everything made it one of the best treks for me.

Overview

About the Destinations:

This cradle shaped valley formed by the slopes of the Garhwal ranges of the Himalayas is known as a nature lovers paradise. And why not? With natural beauty spots in any direction you turn giving a feeling of being in a tastefully created fairyland, Har ki Dun is one of the most pristine locations in the Himalayas situated at an elevation of 3,566m. Surrounded by glittering peaks and dense forests, trekking in this region is moderately easy and can be thoroughly enjoyed by bird watchers, nature lovers, and avid trekkers.

Filled with folklore surrounding the epic Mahabharatha, Har ki Doon is believed to be the path from where Pandavas went to heaven. Head for this less explored destination, trek to Har ki Dun promises to be sensational.

Duration of the Tour: 8D/ 7N

Altitude: 3,566m

Temperature Range: In summers, it is warm during the day, but at night, it can be around 10 deg to 2 deg C

Itinerary

  • Day 1 -

As you drive along winding roads from Dehradun to Sankri/ Taluka, you’ll get a synopsis of what’s in store ahead. Passing through the dreamy hill town of Mussoorie with its green hills and striking flora will only add to the excitement. Pass through a few more remote hill towns till you finally arrive at Sankri, the last motorable village this side of the Himalayas. 13km inside the protected envrions of Govind National Park, you’ll be camping here for the night for tomorrow your trek to Har ki Dun begins.

  • Day 2 -

After a wholesome breakfast and a warm up Yoga session, prepare for the day’s trek to Taluka village, a quaint hamlet tucked amidst the most fascinating and untouched sceneries. As you take this gradual ascent, build a kitty of frames from what nature has to offer here - green pastures and paddy fields. Arrive at the base camp. Retire into tents. This is the start point of your trek.

  • Day 3 -

You’ll continue with the routine of breakfast and warm up exercise ahead of the day’s trekking. Post breakfast, begin the 14km day-long trek to Osla village. This is one of the most unforgettable trails on this trek marked with forests dotted with chestnut, walnut, and willo trees giving the setup a very different look than you may have commonly seen.

The trail further continues along the River Tons, lush green valleys dusted generously with wild flowers, and with luck by your side, you may also have sightings of the elusive Himalayan fauna such as barking deer, bear, and leopards too. Along the way, stop by at a unique temple dedicated to Duryodhana, perched at a height of 2,650m in Osla. Pitch your tents here. Soak in the immense beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas and retire for the night.

  • Day 4 -

After you’ve submitted yourself to the daily routine, prepare yourself for this leg of the trek, which culminates at the final destination – Har ki Dun Valley. The trail meanders through paddy and bean fields, giving you a glimpse of local rural life. Most of the landscape and its surrounding life is untouched by the commercialism of urabn life.

As you gather composure from such simple and innocence of life, the trail steadily ascends to the side of the ridge across the river and then veers left to the Har ki Doon Valley. The accompanying dense forest gives away to the most open meadows laced with wild flowers and flowering herbs. This magnetic sight is but a once’s in a life time experience. Camp for the night.

  • Day 5 -

With Har ki Dun as your home for an entire day, there’s a whole lot you can do. For those who wish to soak in more of this gratifying slice of nature, you can stay back at the base camp and explore the neighbouring areas or choose to read book, or simply unwind. For those wishing for an adrenaline rush, you can trek to the Jaundhar Glacier. This 4km trek can be done over 3hrs and is strongly recommended for its magnificent views. After a packed lunch, trek back to the base camp and retire for the day.

  • Day 6 -

Trek downhill today back to Osla village. After breakfast, start on the downward trek to Osla. This trek although on familiar territory is slightly tricky. Arrive at Osla village in time for lunch. Spend the rest of the day here and retire for the night in pitched tents.

  • Day 7 -

Today will be a long day of trekking. Although the distance is large, its fairly easy because most of it is downhill. Arrive at Sankri. Retire for the day.

  • Day 8 -

Bid adieu to the snow capped ranges today as you drive from Sankri to Dehradun to take your return journey.

More than trekking, I loved the camping part in the high mountains. During the entire trek, the temperature was quite moderate and tolerable. The trails were also easily doable. But yeah, at times they got a bit aggresive, but again, that was the charm of the Har Ki Dun trek.

I really don't understand why people has to go abroad to have fun and adventure. May be I too had the same perception in the beginning, but the Har Ki Dun trek changed my mind completely. You will surely have fun and also get a touch of adventure and thrill on this trek.

Hats off to Thrillophilia for making this trek so wonderful for me and our group. The arrangements were too good, terrains were much friendly, challenges were few and finally we completed it with an ease. One thing, do take enough time to get used to the high altitudes or else you might get sick of the change of temperature fall.

Try to go for it during the summers. The sky remain much clear and the views are simply great. And also as it is less challenging than the others in the region, you can easily complete it without much obstacles.
