Retirement is the perfect time to chase big adventures. At 66 years old, Murali R wanted to experience something truly unique. So, he decided to book a 7-day tour to Bhutan with us, a trip to the famous Land of the Thunder Dragon. Our destination expert, Dinesh Panda, crafted a wonderful itinerary for him that covered everything from smooth transfers to local SIM cards and mandatory Sustainable Development Fees.
His journey started with a scenic drive from Bagdogra airport across the border to Phuentsholing. Over the next few days, he travelled deep into the heart of the country. He explored the capital city of Thimphu and the beautiful valleys of Punakha. He saw ancient fortress-monasteries, prayer flags waving in the wind, and pristine rivers. But throughout this time, he kept waiting for that one experience on this trip- the climb to Paro’s iconic Tiger’s Nest monastery.
The Ultimate Challenge on the Mountain

On the fifth day of his trip, Murali finally stood at the base of the trail in Paro. Looking up at the steep, pine-covered mountain, his target seemed impossibly high. He saw the Taktsang Monastery, or Tiger’s Nest, hanging dramatically on a steep cliff face about 900 meters above the valley floor. The air was thin, cool, and crisp. Murali took a deep breath, adjusted his walking stick, and started his steady ascent.
The first hour of the trek was a steady, uphill grind through dirt paths and exposed tree roots. As his heart began to thud loudly in his chest, Murali paused to wipe the sweat from his forehead. He looked at the steep incline ahead and thought to himself-
"Come on, Murali, you didn’t travel all this way to give up at the bottom. Just take it one step at a time. The mountains aren't going anywhere."
The trail grew narrower and rockier as he climbed higher. Every few minutes, groups of younger hikers brushed past him. His legs were starting to burn from the constant incline, and his breathing became heavy. He stopped by a row of rotating prayer wheels to catch his wind and looked down at his dusty shoes.
"Am I actually old enough to be doing this?" he questioned himself silently. "My knees are definitely feeling every single year of my life right now. But I know my mind is stronger than these joints. Let’s keep moving."
A Triumphant Moment Above the Clouds

The final stretch of the hike involved descending down hundreds of stone steps into the canyon and then climbing back up the other side. The stone steps were uneven and slick in some places, and Murali had to concentrate fully on his balance to cross this part. Sweat drops trickled down his neck, his heart beat faster and faster, but he did not give up. His aim was set. He had to do this.
"Just watch your footing," he reminded himself as he held onto the handrail. "Almost there. Don't look down into the canyon, just focus on the next step. You’ve got this."
The final climb was the hardest, but the reward that came after it was priceless. He stood before the monastery speechless, looking at the dramatic white walls and golden roofs of the monastery hanging over the cliffside. The exhaustion in his muscles instantly melted away, replaced by an unbeatable sense of personal achievement. He realised that age was truly just a number when it came to determination.
Total Relaxation and a Perfect Farewell
After spending some quiet, peaceful time inside the sacred monastery chambers, Murali made his way back down the mountain. The descent was much quicker, but his body was thoroughly exhausted from the day's intense exertion. Our guest experience officer, Sujeet Kumar, had perfectly anticipated this. So, he had arranged a wonderful surprise for Murali back at the resort in Paro.
Murali was treated to a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath. Following the bath, a skilled therapist gave him a deeply soothing full-body massage.
Upon returning, Murali shared his review on TripAdvisor:
"The Tiger's Nest trail today was a challenging but incredibly rewarding hike that offers stunning views of the paro Valley...Tiger's Nest is unlike any other monastery I visited. Its dramatic setting and stunning views make it a truly unforgettable experience. Hiking today to Tiger's Nest was a physical challenge, but the sense of accomplishment I felt after 4 hrs of trekking was unbeatable. After returning to the resort, the Unique Bhutanese Hot stone bath and a soothing massage was totally took me a different level....unique experience…"

On his flight from Bagdogra to his flight home, the only thing playing on his mind on his departure flight was, ‘I did it’.
Why Murali Trusted Thrillophilia for His Bhutan Adventure
Navigating an international mountain kingdom like Bhutan requires extensive planning. Sourcing local SIM cards, paying the mandatory Sustainable Development Fees, tracking route permits, and managing cross-border logistics from Bagdogra can become a major distraction for a solo traveler. Murali wanted an organized, end-to-end framework that would secure his safety on the high-altitude trails while keeping the holiday flow simple.
The assurance of a reliable on-ground infrastructure is what led Murali to partner with Thrillophilia-
- By addressing the regional administrative details well before departure, the team allowed him to transition seamlessly between destinations like Phuentsholing, Thimphu, and Punakha.
- Proactively scheduling a traditional therapeutic stone bath immediately after his grueling four-hour mountain trek demonstrated an intuitive grasp of a senior traveler's physical needs.
This comprehensive coordination eliminated logistical anxiety, giving Murali the clear mind and confidence needed to conquer a legendary Himalayan trail.
