For Dolly, Preeti and Shiv Kumar, Kenya turned into the kind of family holiday where every day brought something completely different. Their seven-day journey moved from peaceful lakes to wildlife-filled national parks, then into the heart of the Maasai Mara.

What made the trip memorable was the variety. There were quiet moments on Lake Naivasha, hours spent watching animals across the savannah, a cultural experience with the Maasai community, and a final day meeting giraffes in Nairobi. It was a holiday filled with big landscapes and even bigger moments.

Where the Safari Started: Lake Naivasha & Lake Nakuru

Their Kenyan adventure began beside the peaceful waters of Lake Naivasha. After arriving in Nairobi, the family travelled towards the lake in their private 4x4 Land Cruiser. The change in scenery was immediate, with the city giving way to open landscapes and the calm beauty of the Rift Valley.

The following day brought a completely different atmosphere at Lake Nakuru National Park. The family spent around six hours on a private game drive, moving through the park in search of wildlife. Every turn brought a new possibility, from animals moving through the grasslands to birds filling the skies. Three Days in the Wild: Maasai Mara

Then came the part Dolly’s family had probably been waiting for most. The journey continued towards the legendary Maasai Mara, where the landscape opened into enormous stretches of golden grassland.

Their first afternoon game drive gave them an immediate taste of what the reserve had to offer. Lions, elephants and giraffes became part of the scenery as the family travelled deeper into the wilderness. There was something special about seeing these animals without fences or barriers, simply moving through their natural surroundings.

The next two days were dedicated almost entirely to safari. With nine-hour private game drives, there was plenty of time to explore different parts of the reserve. The family travelled through the plains with packed lunches, stopping whenever something caught their attention.

Maasai Mara has a way of making even ordinary moments feel cinematic. A giraffe appearing beyond a line of trees, elephants crossing the grasslands, or a herd moving slowly across the horizon can turn a simple drive into a story worth retelling at home. The family also had the opportunity to spot the famous Big Five during their time in the reserve. With so much wildlife around, every drive came with that familiar safari excitement of wondering what might appear around the next bend.

Meeting the Maasai & Discovering Nairobi

One of the most memorable experiences came away from the safari vehicles. During their stay in Maasai Mara, Dolly and her family visited a traditional Maasai village. The experience offered them a glimpse into the community’s culture, traditions and everyday life. Instead of simply seeing Kenya through its wildlife, they got to experience another side of the country through its people.

The visit added a cultural dimension to the trip. After spending days watching animals in the wild, learning about the traditions of a community that has lived closely with this landscape created a completely different connection with the destination. Their final full day brought them back to Nairobi. After the long drive from Maasai Mara, the family explored the city with visits to the Giraffe Centre and Maasai Market.

Meeting giraffes at the Giraffe Centre was a particularly fun way to end the adventure. After seeing wildlife from a safari jeep, being able to get much closer to these famously gentle animals created a completely different experience. The Maasai Market added another colourful stop, with local crafts and souvenirs providing a chance to take a small piece of Kenya home.
