Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is also known as the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is named after Dr. Salim Ali, fondly referred to the world-renowned Indian ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali. In 1930s, he had described Thattekad as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India, comparable only with the Eastern Himalayan region.

Established in 1983 on the insistence of Dr. Salim Ali, this small sanctuary is an ideal haven for around 500 species of birds. More than 50 species of butterflies have been recorded by Madras Naturalists Society. Also, around 28 varieties of animals and nine varieties of reptiles reside in the sanctuary.

The sanctuary is the catchment area of Bhoothathankett Dam, and the scenic terrain is covered with tropical evergreen and deciduous forests and punctuated with grasslands.
