Rumtek Kibber Trek is a part of the Changthang plateau. You need to be physical fit as it requires proper advance preparation.Rumtek Kibber Trek is another challenging and beautiful trek.This trek starts from Ladakh and passes through the high altitude lake Tsomoriri. A trek Rumtse to Kibber is also identified in Himachal as the Parangla trek as it crosses through the high pass of Parangla. It traverses through many nomadic camps to climb the 5800 m high Parang La, with its stunning views. Cross the 5410 m high Kyamayuri La and the Yalung Nyau La, 5440 m.

Start with a river crossing and view herds of Kyang and other wild life. Trek along a heaving track and follow the river Parang Chhu. Trek through the impressive wilds, rocky backdrop, flora and fauna, magnificent sights and the ancient Ki Gompa, located at 4116 m. Take a steep descent through a narrow gorge, followed by steep climb to Thangltak pastures. After crossing a small pass, trek down, cross a river and reach Kibber, 4205 m. Kibber is one of the highest habitations in the world.

Major Attractions

Tso Moririn Lake: Located about 240 km southeast of Leh, 4500 m above sea level, the lake varies its colors from minute to minute. Take a glance of fantastic landscapes and mountains around.

Korzok village: The only settlement on the Tso Moriri Lake is Korzok. Korzok has a picturesque monastery. The Korzog celebration is held around end of July, and at the beginning of August.

Ki Gompa: Settled on a hilly top, around 12 km from Kaza, Ki Gompa is the hugest monastery of Spiti Valley.

How to get there

By Air: Indian Airlines and Jet Airways have regular flights to and fro Leh. Leh airport is linked with important cities like Delhi, Srinagar and Chandigarh.

By Road: Regular state transport bus services run between Srinagar and Leh and Manali and Leh. If you do not prefer traveling by bus, the alternative available is jeeps.

By Rail: Jammu is the closest railway station and is 734 km from Leh. From here Buses take two days to reach Leh.

  • Special permits are required in certain restricted areas.
  • Camping is done near source of water. Make sure that you do not spoil the camping sites.
  • This strenuous hike is reached up to 5800m.
  • You need to be extremely fit for this trek.
  • Avoid walking too fast on wet stones and slopes.
  • Carry boosters like, juices and snacks while trekking.

Thiksey: An exquisite example of Ladakhi architecture, Thiksey Monastery comprises of statue of Buddha. This monastery was built in 1980. Thiksey will let you take a glance of significance of Buddhism.

Hemis: A well known town is famous for its Hemis monastery. It is located around 40 km southeast of Leh. The monastic Hemis festival is also celebrated in early June.
