A Guide to Kundalika River Rafting

  • A Guide to Kundalika River Rafting

The Western Ghats overlook the Konkan region of Maharashtra, which render them exquisitely pristine. Recognized as one of the only two bio-diversity hotspots in India, the Western Ghats is also the birthplace of a collection of rivers that flow out of here. The quaint village of Kolad in Raigad district lies on the banks of one such river—Kundalika. While Kolad as an adventure hub is fast gaining traction, the Kundalika River is best-known for being the only white water rafting destination in Maharashtra.

Kundalika originates in another sleepy, little town called Bhira, and flows onwards as one of the fastest in Western India, before meeting the Arabian Sea near a creek at Roha. Incidentally, water from the nearby Mulshi Dam is released into a series of hydroelectric projects; whose superfluous supply feeds the Kundalika River every morning.

Kundalika river rafting is the resulting opportunity discovered by adventure enthusiasts. After all, the cities of Mumbai and Pune are a mere 132 and 108 kilometers away respectively and is a regular haunt of both cities’ unending supply of rafting buffs.

    The Rapids:

A 14-kilometer stretch on the River Kundalika is dotted with enthralling rapids. The river also passes by a historically-important trade route with intricate stairways known popularly as Savalya Ghat; while traversing through picturesque surroundings over a period of two hours from the start.

The first rapid named ‘Good Morning Buddha’, seems to incite the divine before you face-off with more tumbling rapids. ‘Hilton’ and ‘Pump-house’ quickly follow, before you are in the ‘Fisherman’ rapid—which teems with fish and is a regular fishing haunt for the local folk. A tumble or two later, the river nudges forward into a beautiful set of waves gently unfolding at the ‘Butterfly’ rapid.

Suddenly after comes the ‘Crow’s Nest’, giving one a taste of the suddenness of rapids and drenches you completely by now. Next are a series of major rapids, with ‘Key Wave’ confirming that the earlier rapids were just a preview of what is to come. Remember to paddle hard over ‘Bush on the Bend’, which is in fact a half-submerged tree over which you wade through. ‘Morning Headache’ is where it gets tricky.

If one of the rafters fall into the water while trying to overcome the ferocious rapid, it becomes a headache to the instructor as there is no possible bailout over the two-kilometer long stretch. The interestingly named ‘John Kerry’ is a violent rapid that is bound to leave you gasping, even as ‘Johnny Walker’ intoxicates you with waves crashing into the raft from all sides.

The final stretch is defined by its seemingly endless rapids, and ‘Rajdhani Express’ lives up to the name with a flurry of rollercoaster rapids. The final rapid ‘Boom Shankar’ opens up calm waters—perfect for bodysurfing.

A cool dive into the river with the sun is bearing down is a much-cherished experience among rafters. The lush greenery all around is a sight to behold.

    Best Time to Raft:

The Kundalika river rafting is open throughout the year as it coincides with the release of excess water in the mornings from hydroelectric projects at Ravalje, Bhira and Dholvan. Arranged just once every day at around 8.15 A.M., starting on time is crucial.

Getting acclimatized to the rafting experience is best done in summers, with grade II to III rapids making it a delightful experience for beginners. However, the occasional scarcity of water in summers can lead to the suspension of rafting-related activities on River Kundalika. The exhilaration of grade IV rapids can be experienced during monsoon.

The months between June and October are most favourable for river rafting in Kundalika.

    Other Popular Attractions:

Besides the Kundalika River rafting, which is the main attraction at Kolad, the multifarious terrain of this unassuming hamlet hosts a varied range of adventure activities. While canoeing, waterfall rappelling and zip-line crossing are exciting options, trekkers have discovered a few breathtaking trails through the dense foliage.

Blessed with weather that remains salubrious all year-round, the air can get chilly as dusk falls. The rustic charm of Kolad is heightened with the presence of ancient Kuda Caves and Tamhini Falls in the vicinity.

    How to Reach:

While driving for a few hours from Mumbai and Pune is the easiest way to reach, Kolad railway station is the closest railhead to the Kundalika River rafting.

The nearest airport is 113 kilometers away in Mumbai, and direct buses from both Pune and Mumbai are intermittently regular to the only river rafting site in the state.
