    Green Lake Trek

    Green Lake is one of the most popular treks in Sikkim.

    Sikkim is known for its flora and fauna with thousands of blossoming flowers plants and bushes.

    There are umpteen forests with numerous varieties of rhododendrons, other bright flowers, and birds and several waterfalls on both sides of the trail while trekking all the way through the Zemu glacier.

    Green Lake trek is some what reasonable but needs power too.

    Pre war Everest expeditions also passed through North Sikkim and this trail was part of their route.

    The mountain vistas are with amphitheater sights of peaks with Khanchendzonga at the head of the valley.

    Get well acclimatized with the Green lakes base camp which is presumably 5000 meters.

    Trailing through villages, hills and river valleys along the foothills of the great Kanchanjunga Range will revitalize you physically and mentally during the whole trek.

    Trek Grade: Moderate to Strenuous

    Major Attractions

    Namchi: Namchi is placed at a height of 1,675 m above sea level.

    78 km away from Gangtok, it dominates broad sight of the snowy flocks and vast stretches of valley.

    Namchi is headquarters of South district.

    Tendong Hill: Sited at an altitude of 8530 ft across Damthang, Tendong Hill imparts a striking view of the valley in Sikkim. It is also known as a famous landmark in southern part of Sikkim.

    Tendong is surrounded by thick woods. It is a home to flowering tress like magnolia and rhododendron.

    The forests of this hill are worth exploring, which undoubtedly come up with some grotesque sightings.

    Temi Tea Garden: Temi Tea Garden is located on an average hill slope along the highway.

    The garden is also linked up with Tendong Hill in West Sikkim district.

    How to get there

    By Air: Sikkim doesnt have any airport, but the nearest Airport is Bagdogra (near Siliguri) in West Bengal, which lays only 125kms away from Gangtok the capital of Sikkim.

    Bagdogra linked with cities like Delhi and Kolkata.

    By Road: Sikkim can be reached through northern areas of West Bengal.

    Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri are directly connected to Gangtok and other cities of the state.

    Avoid traveling during the monsoon seasons.

    Temporary problems may occur.

    By Rail: The nearest Railways Station is New Jalpaiguri (near Siliguri), which is linked with Gangtok.

    Gangtok has an extensive rail network with major Railway Stations in India, such as Kolkata, Delhi.

    It is also linked with the cities of Northeastern India like, Guwahati.

    Best time to visit: Mid March to May and October to December

    Facts

    • Green Lake in reality is a shallow pond.
    • A lake once existed there but most of the water has dried out leaving a hollow in its place.
    • Camping is done on pre-defined campsites near source of water and requires no technical climbing equipments accept ropes.
    • While trekking in this area, keep in mind that you do not dirty the surrounding places.
    • Green lake trek requires reasonable physical fitness.
    • The waste should be disposed off away from the camping site.
    • This trek is reachable maximum up to 4935m/16000ft.

    Other Information

    Yumthang: Located on a flat valley and in heavenly environs, Yumthong has no population.

    You will find few yaks moving around one nomadic.

    If you go 23 kilometers ahead, there is the hot springs of Yumey-Samdong on the river Sebu-chu.

    Donkiala pass colligates the Lachung valley to the Lachen valley.

    Kabi Longstock: It is set 20 km from the way to North Sikkim, before Phodong.

    It is the place where the alliance was signed, and memorial stone lies amidst the shadows of tall trees and cardamom fields.

    Chungthang: Chungthang is in North Sikkim bounded by high mountains that seem to feel the sky.

    Located at an altitude of about 1585 m, Chungthang is placed at the conflux of the Lanchen Chu and the Lachung Chu.

    Chungthang is also a pleasing spot for respite for sometime or have a cup of tea before proceeding further.
