Ladakh and Zanskar form the western edge of the Tibetan plateau and are popularly known as the Little Tibet due to the similarity of the culture and the high altitude desert landscape. Politically, this region forms a part of India, though the religious head is still the Dalai Lama.

This trek goes into the hidden kingdom of Zanskar. The trek offers close encounters with Zanskari life, passing interesting villages with their little gompas on practically every day of the trek. The route also takes in eight high passes and, depending on the time of the year, up to a dozen river crossings including the Zanskar river.

Lamayuru is a beautiful place. The flora and fauna is also similar to Tibet and is quite distinct from the rest of the Himalayas. The region, being beyond the reach of the monsoon, is dry with sparse vegetation. Willow groves and poplars are found near villages. Bushes of eidelberry, wild strawberry and sage brush are also common. The fauna includes marmots, blue sheep and ibex and an occasional snow leopard, besides many birds of prey.

Some of the prized sightings would be Blue sheep, the Great Tibetan sheep or the Argali, various mountain and migratory birds, high altitude flora and occasionally a Tibetan Wolf or a Snow leopard if extremely lucky.

During this trek one also gets to tread through the Stok La pass (4900 M) which commands great views of the Indus valley. En route one can visit the Stok Palace museum which houses rare collections of Ladakhi rulers.

This trek is the part of the Markha Valley Trek - a well known trek famous for wild animals. In fact a documentary made on Snow Leopards which eventually won a lot of appreciation and awards was shot in the same valley. It is a perfect moderately difficult trek for the weekend traveler. Low on time and still intend to get a flavor of Ladakh, this is the place.

The beautiful valley of Nubra is towards the north of Leh, and it was the ancient gateway for the famous Silk Route. This valley features open plains and camels that can be found roaming around the Shayok River. The politic allocation of the valley enabled its opening to foreign visitors not until the later half of the 1990s. Compared to Leh, Nubra is around 400 meters lower in height and has a variety in terms of climate. This has enabled the locals to engage in extensive cultivation compared to those living in the Indus Valley.

The Phyang to Hunder Nubra Valley journey is almost untouched and the amazing splendor of the landscape offers breathtaking views of the vast Karakoram mountain range. As you move towards the last day of the journey, it would appear that the beauty of the surroundings keep increasing. Part of the journey is the drive over the worlds highest motor-able road at over 5,600 meters.

This trek would begin at Phyang, located over 23 km towards the west of Leh. It would end in Hunder. This is the last trek-able place in the Shyok Valley.Once in this spot, you would be making your trek back towards Khardung La, the highest motor-able road.

North of the Great Himalayan Treks, amongst a tangled knot of jagged mountains, lies a rugged and fascinating land, the once independent kingdom of Zanskar. Sandwiched between the Indus Valley and the main crest of the Indian Himalayas, this remote and inaccessible setting, well guarded by snowy mountain passes, has kept alive an archaic form of Tibetan Buddhism which flourishes in chains of far-flung monasteries, most of which occupy spectacular fortified locations, high on rocky ridges in isolated valleys.

Lovely high meadow camp sites and dry desert lands, high passes and snow-capped peaks, stunning scenery, Buddhist monasteries and picturesque villages with their irrigated fields of barley and potatoes, and fascinating encounters with the Zanskari people turn a trek in this area into an unforgettable experience. The 14 days trip promises this and much more. Come see the heaven on earth with us.

Lamayuru to Rupsho Trek has a very interesting route beginning at the famous Lamayuru monastery; you walk up the less travelled Ripchar Valley with its small villages, nomadic settlements and pastures where you see a wide variety of flowers and many species of birds from the end of July to end of August.

In this Ladakh trek we will cross from some of the high passes with excellent views of the Karakorams and the Zanskar mountains. The initial part of the trek ends at Chilling, a small village and the only one where Ladakhi metal work is carried out. From Chilling, we cross the river by a cable pulley. A different set of ponies are on the other side of the river to carry our gear. We then continue on to Markha Valley - considered one of the most beautiful valleys in Ladakh.

Here, we pass through several Ladakhi settlements and observe their lifestyle. Several river crossings are involved, but these are not dangerous. Crossing several more passes, through gorges and wide open pastures, we end the trek at Matho village. Here we visit the monastery built on a hill between Stok and Stakna, the only monastery belongs to the Sakyapa order. It is worth visiting this monastery also for the beautiful view that it offers of the valley. Another popular trek is the Parang la trek.

Ladakh occupies a very strategic position in Asia, presenting itself as a frontier province of India where three international borders meet. In the past some of the busiest trade routes of central Asia crisscrossed here. Two of the world's mightiest mountain ranges: The Karakoram and the Great Himalayas surround it in the north and south respectively. Geographically it is the northwestern extension of high and dry Tibetan plateau.

Consequently, rainfall is scanty and the general terrestrial features of the area are dry and deserted. Ladakh has kept alive the dwindling Tibetan cultural heritage. Thousands of religious and cultural monuments in the form of monasteries, nunneries and hermitages dot its arid terrain. It is in Ladakh alone one can savor the variety and beauty of unique and self-contained Himalayan Civilization.

Stok Kangri is a perfect destination for climbers wishing to climb above 6000 mts. You can always have a view of this beautiful peak from Leh town. Once you are at the summit you can see the amazing views of the Saser Kangri (7670mts) in the Karakoram Range, Kang Yatse (6400mts.) and Nun Kun (7135mts)

It is one of the most adventurous treks on an isolated route which takes far into the mountains. It is a real wilderness experience for the adventure seekers, and the best period for exploration is from August to October when most of the snow has melted and the roaring rivers are passable.

The trek starts from Hemis monastery (one of the richest monastery in Ladakh. It enters in famous Markha Valley and Zanskar via Junglam, which is open only for a month. In summer this route is closed due to water crossing and in winter heavy snowfall.

This itinerary is very less frequented and we have to cross rivers many times. The Ladakh trekking tour will be an ideal one in September only when flow of water is low. Until Zangla during first seven days we will not see even a single village.

It is an extremely demanding trek as one constantly has to acclimatize with the high altitudes and be constantly on the move. One does get a one of a kind experience traversing through the adventurous trek routes. Hemis-Padum is an unusual journey which will leads to discovery of a world of untouched beauty.

About the Destination:

Ladakh is the home to numerous natural wonders, but the most precious gift bestowed upon this magical land is the Chadar Trek. The ultimate thrill of walking upon the frozen waters of the Zanskar river in extremely low temperatures sets this trek apart in the list of extreme adventures. Adding grace to the beauty of Ladakh with its unique adventure experience, the Chadar Trek 2021 has the kind of charm that is second to no other adventure.

The frozen Zanskar river trek is actually a connecting link between the villages of Zanskar Valley and the town of chilling in Ladakh and acts as the only and the most stable way of staying connected to the rest of world for the people here in the months of extreme winter. Passing through the deep valley, the frozen river is bounded by huge walls of mountains on both sides, making a person feel like walking amidst high castle walls. Frozen Waterfalls, flowing green river on the trek, the cold temperatures, and the warm smiles of the local Ladakhis who are going by their normal day are the elements that make the Chadar Lake and in fact, all of Ladakh a beautiful paradise to visit.

Located in the midst of two great mountain ranges of the world, the Himalayas and the Karakoram, the land of Ladakh is blessed with many of its own mountain ranges, like that of the Zanskar. And with all the amazing mountains, glaciers, and rivers, one of the better served frozen, Ladakh is never short of surprises to leave you spellbound.

About the Chadar Trek:

Chadar Trek in Ladakh takes the element of trekking and adds its own element of extreme adventure in the form of walking on a thick sheet of ice. The river Zanskar freezes over in the months of winters in Ladakh, creates a kind of sheet of ice on it, hence the name “Chadar”. After arrival in Leh, you will be visiting the market of Leh for some shopping before getting checked by the government officials on your fitness for the rather challenging trek in the Himalayas. The adventure of Chadar trekking 2021 is planned in such a way that you will be covering a distance of almost 65 km by trekking.

You will get a transfer to Shingra Yokma from Leh via chilling and Tilad do for your first taste of walking on the sheet of ice. You will also get acclimatized with the sub-zero temperatures here, as well as figure out where is the best place to plant your foot on the ice. The Zanskar frozen river trek has taken its form because of the extreme temperatures, and so it is extremely important that you take ample time and precautions here. The next day will be the last day for you to opt for the physical wild card exits.

After this, the trek leads to several points on the way as you move on the Chadar frozen river trek, taking you to Tibb Cave, and the Naerak, where you will see the village and mighty frozen waterfalls, while the turquoise green water of the river flows right by you. As you turn around and make your way back, you will encounter Tibb Cave, Gyalpo, and finally Shingra Yokma, from where you will go back to Leh and bring the experience to an end the next day. All the while through this trek, you have gone from a minimum elevation of 10,400 ft to 11,123 ft above sea level, and have gained a lot of more attributes on the way.

Who Can Go:
- Experience of trekking or good fitness level.
- The climber must be fit and have sufficient stamina to cover 5 km of distance in 45 minutes without stress.
- The climber should be able to carry a 10 kg backpack.
- Heart problems, high blood pressure, asthma, and epilepsy cannot be reconciled on this mission. The climber must not have the conditions mentioned above.

Tips for Chadar Trek:

1) Prepare your mind first: This is a difficult trek that comes with a lot of extremities. From the weather to physical requirement. Train your mind to expect and accept the sub-zero level. Do bear in mind that there is a life that exists there as well; for centuries Chadar is used as the only way to commute to Leh during winters. Your mental strength will signal your body to withstand the cold climb.

2) Be Warm: Next is to keep oneself warm as the temperature falls severely on this trek. To keep going and not be deterred by the weather conditions, use 4 layers for the Torso that includes a jacket and a wind sheeter which is waterproof and has a fleece lining. For the bottom, a base layer, thermal underpants and waterproof pants with a fleece lining should suffice. Make sure your fleece and jackets have zips down the front so that you can unzip them as the day grows progressively warmer.

3) Keep a woolen cap and gloves (a must): Essentially you need to sleep well during the night to keep you fresh for the next day of the trek. Keep an insulating water bottle to keep your sleeping bag warm during the night. Use Silk liner inside your bags to keep it warm enough.

4) Footwear: Hiking shoes + Gumboots At occasions, trekking on the Chadar involves wading through knee-deep cold water. Though hiking shoes are highly recommended, gumboots help keep your shoes and feet secure from the icy cold water. It is practically impossible to dry anything at Zanskar trek in Ladakh, so gumboots are a compulsory and crucial addition to the footwear.

5) Expect sweet pain: The Chadar is a glossy, slippery sheet of ice and will never let you walk carelessly. But no matter how careful one is, everyone falls and slips more than once on the Chadar. If you fall, just get back up by rolling on your knees and keep walking with confidence. Gumboots might give you shoe bites, but you’ll get used to it as you walk.

6) Observe and keep moving: The locals can give you firsthand training on how to cross the lake on your foot. On closer observation, you would notice that they walk fast and take Penguin like strides on the ice. As you watch them, you will learn their ways of maneuvering around on the ice blanket and learn when it is wiser to wait than to carry on or the reverse.

7) Keep your electronics warm: Extreme cold climate can ruin electronics. Hence keep them warm by keeping them safe by tucking them into your pockets closer to your body it will keep them warm and long-lasting.

8) Protect your fingers and toes: In sub-zero temperatures, fingers and toes are the most exposed and can be frozen resulting in bad pain when camping. Carry waterproof woolen socks and gloves. An extra pair of socks would help as they gather moisture while wearing gumboots.

9) Warming pads: Warming pads are very helpful for those who feel cold sooner than others. These are exothermic pads to be slipped in your gloves and socks. They release heat and keep you warm for up to 10 hours.

Camel Trekking or Caravan with camels has been a vogue for Ladakh quest since Seventeenth century until partition was done in the year of 1947. Camel Traveling is predominantly evident in Nubra Area from Hundar up to the Diskit .Bactrian camels, along with dual humps, are basically also recognized as the 'Real Camel'. The offspring of those camels were used for riding and transportation in the 'Silk Route' in the consecutive centuries of 17th, 18th and 19th.

The most distinctive feature of the Bactrian camel is its two humps. These humps, contrary to popular belief, are designed to store fat and not water. Bactrian camels are classified as herbivores. They prefer vegetation that is prickly, dry, salty, and/or bitter. However, when food is scarce they will eat bones, and various types of animal flesh.

This trip involves three days of seeing in the desert from over a camel.

How To Reach:

If you are travelling from Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai or any other city, book your air tickets for Day Zero, which is the day before Day 1 on the itinerary. If your trek start day is 24 July, book your air tickets for 23 July to either Srinagar.

We recommend this. It gives you an added rest day at Srinagar or even better if you are able to head towards Sonamarg.

There are two options.

Option 1:
Fly directly to Srinagar.

You can travel to Sonamarg if you land at Srinagar before 12 noon.

How to reach Sonamarg? – From the airport, walk outside for 800 meters to take an auto to TRC. Auto will cost you around Rs 250 which is a good rate to pay. They might ask for Rs 300. Take a cab if you are travelling in a group. A taxi/cab will cost Rs 600 to Rs 750.

From TRC, you will get Swaraj Mazda buses frequently going to Soura which is 8 kms away. It takes about 40 mins to reach here and costs Rs 15. If you choose an auto, it will cost around Rs 150 to Rs 200.

From Soura, you get buses to Kangan which is about Rs 40. Again from Kangan, you need to change and take shared cabs to Sonamarg. This will cost around Rs 70 to Rs 150 depending on the number of travellers. If you get shared cabs directly from Soura to Shitkadi, it will cost Rs 300 to Rs 450.

Note: Srinagar Airport to Srinagar TRC, you do have the bus service. However, they are not reliable. They do not move until they are half full.

Option 2:

Taking a train/bus to Jammu and reach Srinagar

If you are taking a bus to Jammu, then you have multiple options to take. There are two gates outside Jammu ISBT. You will get shared cabs from both these gates.

If you are reaching the Railway Station, the share cabs to Srinagar will cost between Rs 700 to Rs 1000.

While on Chadar Frozen River trek, navigate over the frozen river Zanskar up in the mountains of Kargil, Jammu and Kashmir. This encompasses a plethora of jaw-dropping sights alongside the gorgeous ravines and canyons of Ladakh that serves as the only means of communication between the hamlets of Zanskar Valley and Chilling.

Trekking in Chadar is laden with a bunch of unique experiences that include walking on the Zanskar frozen River which is literally a sheet of ice with glacial waters running underneath and camping out in inhospitable conditions inside caves. The journey of Zanskar Chadar trek takes one through beautiful sightings of hanging icicles, breathtaking iced-peaks set against turquoise skies and charming Tibetan prayer flags. In some areas, the ‘Chadar’ or ice sheet forms only on the corners of the Zanskar River that become narrow ledges through which trekkers cross by crawling under dangerous overhang rocks. At times, the Chadar even breaks right under one’s feet and floats away like a raft. The Chadar frozen river trek is open only during winter when the ice sheet is most stable.
