1.Chadar Trek: The 62-kilometre Chadar trek takes to an elevation of 11,100 feet and is a difficult one to complete. The unique feature of this walk is that the trekkers need to walk upon the Zanskar River which freezes into an enormous ice sheet during winter. You walk on this trail that is generally used by the locals while soaking in the breathtaking views of spectacular ice formations like the towering icicles and dazzling ice caves. This 6-9 day trekking in Ladakh is an exhilarating experience that may challenge your stamina and test your limits to the brim.

2.Snow Leopard Trek Ladakh: The Snow Leopard trekking in Ladakh takes you to over 4400 metres above sea level. This is a moderately difficult trek that lasts for 7–10 days. You follow knowledgeable guides into the wild to look for snow leopards, which are hard to spot. The trek also treats you to some beautiful views of snow-capped Himalayan mountains and rare animals like Himalayan ibex and Tibetan Argali.

3.Stok Kangri Trek: The 40-kilometre Stok Kangri trekking in Ladakh ascends to elevations of about 6152 metres. It usually takes between 8 and 10 days to finish. The high altitude and challenging trails make this trek difficult. You need to be in good shape and be used to trekking in higher elevations to be confident on this trek. When you reach the top of Stok Kangri, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the Zanskar and Karakoram ranges.

4.Parang La Trek:The 125-kilometre Parang La trek takes you through the pristine scenery of the Spiti Valley and the western Changthang plateau. These plateaus is located in the Zanskar and trans-Himalayan range of mountains. The trek is a difficult one as it climbs to altitudes exceeding 5,500 meters, and it usually lasts for about 8-10 days. You must be in good shape and know how to handle mountain sickness to complete this adventure. On this trek, you will also get to see beautiful landscapes, clear streams, diverse flora and fauna. and small villages amidst magnificent surroundings.

5.Markha Valley Trek, Ladakh: Discover the frigid desert of Ladakh in the Hemis National Park on the Markha Valley Trek. It's a moderately difficult trek that includes crossing ice-cold rivers and crossing high passes at 17,060 feet. Along the route, you'll come across steep canyons, a variety of wildlife, and also Mt. Kang Yatse. It takes about 6-7 days to the top. The trek starts at 10,490ft at Chilling, and it truly tests your fitness as well as stamina.

6.Kang Yatse Trek With Markha Valley, Ladakh: The Kang Yatse Trek with Markha Valley reaches heights of over 6,000 meters. It usually takes about 10-12 days to complete. This route of trekking in Ladakh is considered difficult due to the high altitude and steep climbs. Trekkers need to be physically fit and properly acclimatized before undertaking this journey. Along the way, you'll pass through the wildflower-filled pastures of Nimling and Thactungtse. Moreover, you will also pass through the refreshing lakes of Tigu, and the mysterious Mani stones that make for a rewarding experience.

Altitude: 20,341 ft.

7.Lamayuru To Chilling Trek, Ladakh: The 63-kilometer Lamayuru to Chilling Trek reaches a maximum elevation of roughly 4950 metres. It's a fairly difficult walk that goes through orchards of apricots and apples, barley fields, and high mountain passes. The trail goes over three passes of Kongskil La Prinkti La, and Dung Dung Chan La from where you can see the Stok and Karakoram ranges. This trek takes 5 to 6 days to finish and requires some amount of technical skills to complete as well. 

8.Sham Valley Trek: The Sham Valley trek is also called the “baby trek” given the easy level of the route. The highest elevation you reach on this 27-kilometer trek is about 3874 meters. It is a short 3-day trek and is perfect for families and beginners. This picturesque route of trekking in Ladakh takes you through the lower ranges of the region. It treats you to views of Alchi monastery, Yangthang village, and willows and barley fields. 

9.Ripchar Valley Trek: Set out on the 8-day-long Ripchar Valley trekking in Ladakh, starting from Lamayuru and traversing through the less-travelled Ripchar Valley. Explore small villages, nomadic settlements, and lush pastures adorned with diverse flowers and birds. The ideal time to go for this trek is from July to August. You can encounter breathtaking views of the Karakorams and Zanskar ranges while crossing high passes. With a highest altitude of 4300m and a moderate difficulty level, this trek promises a memorable adventure.

10.Padum to Darcha Trek: The thrilling 16-kilometre Darcha Padum trek takes you across the breathtaking Zanskar valley. You'll see vast moonscapes, meadows, and flowing rivers as you travel through remote towns, desert regions, and old monasteries. The trek takes around 9 days to complete and goes up to a height of 5090 metres. Though a difficult trek, it gives you the opportunity to see historical places like the architecturally stunning Phuktal Monastery as well.

11.Lamayuru to Alchi Trek: In Ladakh, you can trek from Lamayuru to Alchi within a period of 5-6 days, and see beautiful towns and landscapes along the way. Prepare yourself for two days of difficult mountain pass crossings and the rest of the trail can be relatively easier. Highlights include seeing the gompas (monasteries) at Alchi, Lamayuru, and Sumda Choon. This 71-kilometer walk, which reaches a maximum elevation of 5153 meters, is graded as a difficult one.

12.Nubra valley trek from Phyang to Hunder:The 59-kilometre Nubra Valley Trek from Phyang to Hunder in Ladakh, reaches altitudes up to 5,000 meters. This walk traces the path of an old Silk Road trading route that linked the valleys of Indus and Nubra. It usually takes about 6-8 days to complete. It is a moderately difficult trek, and suitable for trekkers with some experience. You will be mesmerized by the the breathtaking views from Lasermo La's high pass, and the magnificent valley of Hunder Dok en route.

What is the best time for trekking in Ladakh?

The best months to go for Ladakh trekking are from June to September as there isn't any snow on the routes. Weather-wise, these months are warm and dry, and the landscapes are teeming with lush flora. This is the best time of year to reach all of the major treks, including Lamayuru to Chilling, Nubra Valley, Sham Valley, Rumtse to Tsomoriri, Stok Kangri, and Markha Valley.

What are some of the moderate treks in Ladakh?

Sham Valley: This 10-kilometre walk is good for beginners and its trail goes through beautiful towns and old monasteries. It gives you a beautiful view of the Himalayas and a taste of Ladakhi culture.

Markha Valley:  It's a fairly difficult trek that takes you through a variety of landscapes, river crossings, and traditional Ladakhi villages. You get to see wildlife like Tibetan wolves and take in stunning views of Kang Yatse’s pyramid peak.

Nubra Valley from Diskit to Hunder:  This trek is a bit easier and takes you through deserts, high mountain passes, and the famous Hunder dunes. This trek offers a unique mix of Tibetian and Ladakhi culture and takes you on a walk through the best of nature.

Lamayuru to Alchi:  This 5-day moderately difficult walk takes you past the old monasteries of Lamayuru, Mang Gyu and Alch. You can enjoy the warm welcome of the Ladakhi people and the stunning views of the nearby Himalayan mountains.

What is the best time to go for the Stok Kangri trek?

Mid-June to mid-September is the best time to undertake the Stok Kangri trek. That is because from July onwards the snow melts and your chances of reaching the summit increase. Also, the weather in Ladakh is great at this time of year, with the average temperature ranging between 20°C and 30°C. 

How safe is trekking in Ladakh?

Trekking in Ladakh is safe, if you’re wholly prepared with right cloths, equipment, cash, knowledge about place, climatic condition and right trekking group. Climatic condition, especially snow storm should be checked because there are certain accidental cases before. Otherwise, one can enjoy a safe trekking in Ladakh. Travelling in Ladakh trek can be sometime unsafe in terms of health and disputed region around.
Acute Mountain Sickness: This happens due to lesser oxygen available at higher altitudes, resulting in higher breathing rate to balance. Symptoms could be headache, nausea and breathlessness.
Difficult Roads: During the journey, the roads does gets narrow and rocky, with hairpin bends and blind corners. So while you are driving on this route, make sure you drive at a safe speed.
Chinese Incursion: There has been Chinese incursion in Leh-Ladakh, but that never created any ruckus for Tourists. There are a lot of armed men around the city and they are really doing a great job. If going along with troop then it is quite safe in Ladakh trek.

What kind of shoes are required for trekking in Ladakh?

For Ladakh trekking, you need sturdy trekking shoes that give your ankles a lot of support. They should be able to guard against sharp objects, offer a foothold on rocky surfaces, and lessen the risk of ankle injury. These shoes come with deep groves on the sole, and high ankles for support

Can we go alone for trekking in Ladakh?

No, it is not advised to go alone for Ladakh trekking by yourself. The rough terrain, high elevations, and remote places in the area make it risky. Thus, it is suggested that you go with a guide or group. This way you can be sure of your safety, get help with direction, and get emergency help when needed.

What is the duration of the Markha Valley trek?

It usually takes between 6 - 8 days to finish the Markha Valley trek. However, it depends on how fast you walk and which trail you choose to reach the destination

What level of fitness is required for Markha Valley Trek?

The Markha Valley Trek requires a moderate to high level of fitness. That is because you need to be able to walk for several hours a day, along long stretches of trails. This includes walking on rough ground and handling some steep climbs through Kongmaru La Pass.

Which type of shoes should I buy?

There are different types of footwears or boots for trekking. It depends on the weather, trail condition and duration of the trek.
Hiking Shoes: They are lightweight and have flexible soles. They are meant for short treks (one day or weekend). This type of shoes are good when you don’t have to carry heavy loads.
Trek Boots: These high-end version of hiking boots, have added support for your feet and ankles. Trek boots provide excellent support for leg muscles on rough terrain, especially when you are prone to occasional slips and twisted ankles.
Expedition Boots: Designed for trekkers looking for longer days of expedition, the boots have thicker and more aggressive out-soles. The fabric used in these boots are more robust too.

What is the level of fitness expected from the participants?

The Ladakh trek can range upto 13000 feet to 18000 feet. Lack of oxygen, days of trekking can cause Acute Mountain Sickness to contend with, which include loss of appetite, nausea and dizziness. So one need to be very fit to cover the highest altitude of mountain.

Keeping hydrated throughout the trek is extremely important. Moreover, having diet food before the trek is highly advised.

What to carry while trekking in Ladakh?

When trekking in Leh Ladakh, you should bring things like sturdy trekking shoes, warm clothes, and sunscreen. You can also carry a water bottle, snacks, a first aid kit, a headlamp, and a map or GPS device. Additionally, remember to bring necessary personal items such as toiletries, a camera, and a small bag to carry your things on the trek

What about medical facilities and doctor while on the trek?

You can find base hospital Sonamn Norphel Memorial Hospital in Leh having fully equipped with medical facilities. Company would provide First Aid Box for any medical emergency. Most of the trekkers are qualified in Advance Mountaineering Course and Wilderness First-Aid. They are quite aware about medical emergencies trekkers can fall into. Every trekker need to carry medications.

Is Diamox advisable?

For those who suffer Acute Mountain Sickness, Diamox is recommeded. However, many do avoid to consume such medication during the trek because it goes against the spirit of trekking. The deciding factor depends on the number of trekking days and condition of the body. It is best to start on a course of Diamox before you start the trek. If on the other hand you are on a 12-14 days trek, then you have sufficient time to allow your body to acclimatize to the altitude. In this situation, you may not need diamox. Diamox forces the kidneys to excrete bicarbonate, the base form of carbon dioxide. It helps in balancing the effects of the hyperventilation that occurs at altitude in an attempt to get oxygen.

What can be the difficulties which we can face while trekking?

Acute Mountain Sickness is the major problem one can face while trekking. This is because of less oxygen in the highest range. Other difficulty is the climatic condition. During winter season, there can be snow storm or other climatic issues faced by trekkers. It is important to be in group, because any problem arises, you’ll get quick medical assistance.

Does the Ladakh trek require proper acclimatization?

Yes, due to the high elevations, proper acclimatisation is required for trekking in Leh Ladakh. Acclimatising the body to lower oxygen levels lowers the chances of altitude sickness and makes trekking safer.

Will we get safe drinking water on trekking?

Drinking water is the big issue in Ladakh trek. Many may face health issues after drinking stream or even local water. Better to carrying enough bottles of clean water along during the trekking period. The best way to have water filter, during your stay at the hotel. If you're using iodine tablets, then it would work fine. Before the trek, get yourself packed with boil water.

How many trekkers are there in one group? I am the only girl in trek, is it safe?

The number of trekkers can be from 4 to 12 or even 20. But it also depends on the trek to trek. For difficult treks, the group size will be small, but for easy trek the group size can be large. For girls, trekking is extremely safe. The trekking company have highest regards for women safety and will ensure that they're safe durint the entire trek. If there is only one girl in the trip, then she will be provided with single tent to sleep alone. If there are more girls, then they can sleep under one tent.

How many trekkers will be sleeping in one tent?

It depends on the size of the tent carried during the trek. However, one or two trekkers will sleep in the tent. Also, sleeping bags will be there with the tents. Moroever, there will be separate tent for girls to sleep during the trek.

What are the sanitary facilities?

There is no building or civilization available during treks. Niether there is a conceate toilet available. Tents are accopanied with portable toilets for nature calls. Also making cat holes is also encouraged.

Can we hire a porter to carry our personal luggage? What will be the cost?

Yes, you can hire porter or guide, available in Ladakh. The cost of the porter depends on the type of luggage and number of people in the group. It can range from Rs 1000- Rs 3000/- roughly per day.

What is the temperature in the day time and night time?

The temperature during day time is recorded around -10 degrees. However, sunny day can make the environment warm as well due to the reflection of the sunrays. During night time, the temperature futher falls to -35 degree.

Can we have liquor or smoke while on the trek?

Strictly not. Smoking or alcohol is highly banned during the trek to Ladakh, or even any trek. This is because to keep our body active and high strength. In fact, there would be other people in the group who may object of consuming alcohol or smoking. For trekking, you need to mentally strongand physically active to have successful trek.

Will we stay in the caves?

Stay in cave completely depends on availabilty of the space. There are few caves in Chadar Trek, but due to huge traffic one may have few chance of staying in the cave.

What do we do with garbage which is produced during a trek?

There are garbage disposable facilities during the trek. So trekkers can use it during the trek to keep the area clean.
