This region has a criss cross of rivers namely Varagaliar, Karuneer, Konalar, Amravathy and Chinnar. You will also find a number of reservoirs here such as Aliyar, Upper Aliyar, Kadamparai, Upper and Lower Nirar, Thirumurthy and Parambikulam. Founded in 1984, this park is situated in Palghat district. It occupies an area of 89.2 sq km. The Kunthi river valley is close by. It is approximately 180 km from Cochin and 40 km from Mannarkkad. The park is made up of evergreen rain forest. The greenery along the jungles deepest cores is breath taking and a sight to remember for the visitors. This park is also known locally as Sairandhrivanam. The remoteness of the park has resulted in very little human intervention in this park. It is surrounded by Attappadi Reserve Forests in the east, and dense jungles of Palghat and Nilambur in the west and south respectively. The Wildlife here has 100 species of butterfly, Ceylon frogmouth, 400 species of moths, the nilgiri laughin thrush, nilgiri langur, Great Indian Hornbill, the lion-tailed Macaque, the giant Malabar squirrel, Nilgiri langur, tiger, leopard, elephant, sambar, pit viper, wild bear, nilgai, etc. You will also find 966 varieties of flowers and 100 orchids plants. This is apart from the large variety of animals and birds found here. The USP of this place are large hollow trees where in people can easily sit and enjoy themselves.

70 km from Cochin, The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary otherwise known as Thattekad Sanctuary is in Kothamangalam district, Ernakulam district. It lies on the northern bank of the Periyar River. The century was declared as a sanctuary in 1983 on behalf of the suggestions of Dr. Salim Ali. Due to the richness in the variety of bird species here, and to get more glimpses of the phenomenal varieties, a large quantity of teak and mahogany is cultivated in the lowland areas of these regions. The forest is spread in an area of 25.16 sq km and has tropical semi green deciduous forests. You will find Sloth bears, Porcupines, leopards, elephants and many such mammals in the forests here.

Tucked in the valley between the Anamalai ranges of Tamil Nadu and the Nelliampathy ranges of Kerala on the majestic Western Ghats is the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary. This virgin valley that is the pride of Palakkad district is a glorious tribute to untouched nature. The reservoir harbors several varieties of aquatic fauna including mugger crocodiles that are often seen sunning on its banks. The sanctuary being a major ecological continuum from Peechhi to Eravikulam through Anamalai aids the large viable populations of wildlife in kerala. Parambikulam has one of the largest population of gaur (bison). It is also a home to elephants, sloth bears, wild boars, sambhars, chital tigers, panthers and crocodiles. There are also bonnet macaques, spectacled cobras, kraits, vipers, turtles, darters, little cormorants and black eagles. It is the best protected and least crowded sanctuary in Kerala. Now it attained the status of Tiger Reserve. The entry is restricted and allowed only 30 vehicles a day.
