Ladakh and Zanskar form the western edge of the Tibetan plateau and are popularly known as the Little Tibet due to the similarity of the culture and the high altitude desert landscape. Politically, this region forms a part of India, though the religious head is still the Dalai Lama.

This trek goes into the hidden kingdom of Zanskar. The trek offers close encounters with Zanskari life, passing interesting villages with their little gompas on practically every day of the trek. The route also takes in eight high passes and, depending on the time of the year, up to a dozen river crossings including the Zanskar river.

Lamayuru is a beautiful place. The flora and fauna is also similar to Tibet and is quite distinct from the rest of the Himalayas. The region, being beyond the reach of the monsoon, is dry with sparse vegetation. Willow groves and poplars are found near villages. Bushes of eidelberry, wild strawberry and sage brush are also common. The fauna includes marmots, blue sheep and ibex and an occasional snow leopard, besides many birds of prey.

North of the Great Himalayan Treks, amongst a tangled knot of jagged mountains, lies a rugged and fascinating land, the once independent kingdom of Zanskar. Sandwiched between the Indus Valley and the main crest of the Indian Himalayas, this remote and inaccessible setting, well guarded by snowy mountain passes, has kept alive an archaic form of Tibetan Buddhism which flourishes in chains of far-flung monasteries, most of which occupy spectacular fortified locations, high on rocky ridges in isolated valleys.

Lovely high meadow camp sites and dry desert lands, high passes and snow-capped peaks, stunning scenery, Buddhist monasteries and picturesque villages with their irrigated fields of barley and potatoes, and fascinating encounters with the Zanskari people turn a trek in this area into an unforgettable experience. The 14 days trip promises this and much more. Come see the heaven on earth with us.

Lamayuru to Rupsho Trek has a very interesting route beginning at the famous Lamayuru monastery; you walk up the less travelled Ripchar Valley with its small villages, nomadic settlements and pastures where you see a wide variety of flowers and many species of birds from the end of July to end of August.

In this Ladakh trek we will cross from some of the high passes with excellent views of the Karakorams and the Zanskar mountains. The initial part of the trek ends at Chilling, a small village and the only one where Ladakhi metal work is carried out. From Chilling, we cross the river by a cable pulley. A different set of ponies are on the other side of the river to carry our gear. We then continue on to Markha Valley - considered one of the most beautiful valleys in Ladakh.

Here, we pass through several Ladakhi settlements and observe their lifestyle. Several river crossings are involved, but these are not dangerous. Crossing several more passes, through gorges and wide open pastures, we end the trek at Matho village. Here we visit the monastery built on a hill between Stok and Stakna, the only monastery belongs to the Sakyapa order. It is worth visiting this monastery also for the beautiful view that it offers of the valley. Another popular trek is the Parang la trek.

Ladakh occupies a very strategic position in Asia, presenting itself as a frontier province of India where three international borders meet. In the past some of the busiest trade routes of central Asia crisscrossed here. Two of the world's mightiest mountain ranges: The Karakoram and the Great Himalayas surround it in the north and south respectively. Geographically it is the northwestern extension of high and dry Tibetan plateau.

Consequently, rainfall is scanty and the general terrestrial features of the area are dry and deserted. Ladakh has kept alive the dwindling Tibetan cultural heritage. Thousands of religious and cultural monuments in the form of monasteries, nunneries and hermitages dot its arid terrain. It is in Ladakh alone one can savor the variety and beauty of unique and self-contained Himalayan Civilization.

Stok Kangri is a perfect destination for climbers wishing to climb above 6000 mts. You can always have a view of this beautiful peak from Leh town. Once you are at the summit you can see the amazing views of the Saser Kangri (7670mts) in the Karakoram Range, Kang Yatse (6400mts.) and Nun Kun (7135mts)

It is one of the most adventurous treks on an isolated route which takes far into the mountains. It is a real wilderness experience for the adventure seekers, and the best period for exploration is from August to October when most of the snow has melted and the roaring rivers are passable.

The trek starts from Hemis monastery (one of the richest monastery in Ladakh. It enters in famous Markha Valley and Zanskar via Junglam, which is open only for a month. In summer this route is closed due to water crossing and in winter heavy snowfall.

This itinerary is very less frequented and we have to cross rivers many times. The Ladakh trekking tour will be an ideal one in September only when flow of water is low. Until Zangla during first seven days we will not see even a single village.

It is an extremely demanding trek as one constantly has to acclimatize with the high altitudes and be constantly on the move. One does get a one of a kind experience traversing through the adventurous trek routes. Hemis-Padum is an unusual journey which will leads to discovery of a world of untouched beauty.
