Founded in 1984, this park is situated in Palghat district. It occupies an area of 89.2 sq km. The Kunthi river valley is close by. It is approximately 180 km from Cochin and 40 km from Mannarkkad. The park is made up of evergreen rain forest. The greenery along the jungles deepest cores is breath taking and a sight to remember for the visitors.
This park is also known locally as Sairandhrivanam. The remoteness of the park has resulted in very little human intervention in this park. It is surrounded by Attappadi Reserve Forests in the east, and dense jungles of Palghat and Nilambur in the west and south respectively.
The Wildlife here has 100 species of butterfly, Ceylon frogmouth, 400 species of moths, the nilgiri laughin thrush, nilgiri langur, Great Indian Hornbill, the lion-tailed Macaque, the giant Malabar squirrel, Nilgiri langur, tiger, leopard, elephant, sambar, pit viper, wild bear, nilgai, etc.
You will also find 966 varieties of flowers and 100 orchids plants. This is apart from the large variety of animals and birds found here. The USP of this place are large hollow trees where in people can easily sit and enjoy themselves.
Tucked in the valley between the Anamalai ranges of Tamil Nadu and the Nelliampathy ranges of Kerala on the majestic Western Ghats is the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary. This virgin valley that is the pride of Palakkad district is a glorious tribute to untouched nature. The reservoir harbors several varieties of aquatic fauna including mugger crocodiles that are often seen sunning on its banks.
The sanctuary being a major ecological continuum from Peechhi to Eravikulam through Anamalai aids the large viable populations of wildlife in kerala. Parambikulam has one of the largest population of gaur (bison). It is also a home to elephants, sloth bears, wild boars, sambhars, chital tigers, panthers and crocodiles. A paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers, Anamalai Sanctuary covers an area of 108 sq. km. A hilly forest of Anamalai comprises of evergreen shoals with folds of terrains. The prominent destination, Anamalai is located on hill. This place is bounded by dense woods and verdant terrains. 800 species are found in the National Park of Anamalai. The avian world includes green pigeon, emerald dove, great Indian Malabar pied horn bill, woodpecker etc.
