Not far from the Kerala town of Kasargod lies the small hamlet of Thonikadavu known for its green surroundings and peaceful atmosphere. The guided Thonikadavu Trek through 30 acres of farm land and forest filled with rich flora gives a wonderful opportunity to leave behind the city life and soak in the refreshing ambience.
The short 2-3 hour trek can be started at two separate times. The morning slot starts around 7 am and is followed by a traditional Kerala ‘sadya’ for lunch. Alternatively you could choose to start the trek after lunch around 3 pm and partake in tea and snacks once you return to the base.
The activity will take you through a landscape covered with dense trees of the Muliyar Forest which are home to a large variety of birds, a delight to avid bird watchers. It passes through large rubber and coconut farms where you will get a firsthand experience of coconut plucking and de-husking. The trek ends where the meandering Payaswini River beckons you to take a refreshing dip in it. There are several streams and fresh water pools on the way along with a small waterfall where you can spot small fish if you are lucky. An old house with its Mangalore-tiled roof, stands inside the farmland and lends itself as a welcome stopover point for a brief rest.
