About the Roopkund Trek:

The Roopkund trek is an invigorating expedition from the high altitude region of Loharjung, in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at 3200m, to the ‘Skeletal Lake’ of Roopkund shadowed by the mighty peak of Trishul standing tall at 5000m. The trail for the trek that leads to the frozen Roopkund Lake also overlaps with the religious pilgrimage of Nanda Devi thus making this experience of trekking in Uttarakhand, an overall mix of culture and adventure.

Going by legends, the ‘Mystery Lake’ is immersed and circled by hundreds of skeletons which is the major attraction of this trek. The skeletons happen to belong to pilgrims who fell to their deaths due to the unexpected natural calamities.

For trekking enthusiasts, the Roopkund trekking is an idyllic one comprising of trails cutting through dense thickets, surpassing the gushing waters of brooks and streams as well as charming lakes and vast expanse of lush grasslands, also known as ‘Bugyals’. At the top of the mysterious lake of Roopkund, get the opportunity to witness and marvel at the stunning views of  Roopkund Glacier, Trishul, Nandaghungti and Choukhamba peaks.

About the destination:

The mysterious lake of Roopkund is cradled in the laps of Mt. Trishul and perches at a dizzying altitude of nearly 16,500 ft.! Draped in a blanket of mystery and myth, the lake is home to skeletal remains of countless humans and animals, which are clearly visible when the snow has melted away. This has earned it the name ‘Skeleton Lake Trek’. The trail to Roopkund originates from the base village of Lohajung, and winds through mesmerising forests of oak adorned with vibrant rhododendrons.

One of the highlights of the Skeleton Lake trek is that it takes you through the twin meadows of Ali and Bedni Bugyal, which are two of the highest alpine meadows in Asia. The locals generally bring their herds to Bedni Bugyal for grazing. Bedni Bugyal makes for an ideal campsite, and unfolds breathtaking views of the neighbouring Nanda Ghunti and Chaukhambha, though the magnificent Mount Trishul rises above all others to render you truly speechless. To add to the veil of myth, there are various stories that revolve around the trek. Every campsite has a backstory which the locals will gladly share with you.

The trek from Bhagwabasa, the last campsite, to Roopkund starts very early in the morning, with millions of stars playing chaperone. Although a bit daunting towards the end, the reward more than compensates for the exertion, and everything else pales against the splendour and glory of Roopkund Lake. If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, you can also trek further up to the ridge of Junargali, from where Mount Trishul seems only a touch away! About the Kalindi Khal:

Perched at a mind-numbing altitude of over 6,000 meters, Kalindi Khal is one of the most offbeat and challenging trekking destinations in India. Bursting will thrill and adventure, the Kalindi Khal trek borders on a proper expedition, and consequently demands some prior knowledge of technical and mountaineering skills. The initial leg of the trek traces the Gaumukh trail, and passes Chirbasa, Bhojbasa, Gaumukh, Nandanvan, Vasuki Tal, Mana and Badrinath. The trek begins from Gangotri, and exposes you to mind boggling views of the majestic Bhagirathi peaks, and the lofty mount Shivling, which can be seen rising from base to summit in stark entirety!

From Gaumukh, the trek takes place entirely on a stunning glacier which is carpeted with lots of crevasses! These glaciers keep shifting and breaking on and off, which adds to the challenging level of the trek. Since the glaciers keep breaking, the route is not well defined, and needs to be carefully traversed. The trail is treacherous, and if one doesn’t have a decent sense of direction, it is easy to get lost. To get to Vasukital, you must traverse an extremely narrow ridge with steep inclines. The thrill of climbing a petrifying ice wall with a 60 degree incline awaits you, which descends to glaciers laden with crevasses on the other end!

Vasuki Tal, cradled atop 4,900 m is the origin of the Vasuki Ganga that eventually meets Mandakini. The trek to the Kalindi Summit winds through Kalindi Pass, which is quite daunting and equally perilous. It demands exhaustive technicalities on a steep glacier, but the view from the top overshadows all exhaustion! The trek ends at the quaint little village of Mana, which is also the last village of India, beyond which lies the Chinese frontier! There are few other treks that have the privilege of being fenced by such beautiful Himalayan wonders. If you’re looking for some real Himalayan adventure, count on the Kalindi Khal trek to satiate your craving.

Constructed using only renewable natural elements like mud, stones and thatch, Riverine Woods, Corbett is an eco-friendly resort with a spectacular view.

Spacious, sunlight, with ample of space to walk around and yet feel at home, the place has a rustic charm. The rooms too carry the warmth and rustic ambience, and are done with wood. They each have an attached washroom and all modern amenities for a comfortable stay. The retreat has increased the frequency of cleaning public areas (including the lobby, doorknobs, common washrooms, etc.) and continues to use hospital-grade disinfectants. There are more antibacterial hand sanitizers available throughout the property.

The hotel is in a secluded spot in the wild amidst lush greenery wherever the eyes go, making it perfect for a relaxed stay and peaceful time. There is a swimming pool as well where one can relax and unwind. You can also opt for jeep safaris and bird watching activities while here.

About the activity:

  • Set amidst the green belt of Himalayas, supporting an enormous variety of flora and fauna, lies the Kafal House in Pangot.
  • Well-furnished rooms with twin beds and attached baths with hot and cold running water and wooden-tin roof that give good insulation in winter make this place a perfect one to unwind and relax in the lap of nature.
  • The design of this lodge also provides good ventilation. Choose your own walking trail by the jungle. The oak, pine, bamboo, cedar, rhododendron and other conifers make the walk delightfully beautiful and refreshing.
  • The forest gets thicker as you walk further. The trickle of fresh water streams enriches the habitat and you can often spy wildlife around the streams and a host of birdlife inhabits this world. This walk is an absolute dream for birdwatcher.
