OLD LIGHTHOUSE

About the Place:

This is another remarkable construction by French rulers. During the French rule, Pondicherry used to be the business capital for the rulers. They constructed the lighthouse in 1835 to use it as a beacon for the ships. Old lighthouse has round tower and square base, with its height up to 29 meters and foundation depth of 9 meters. It has got 3 openings in the form of a shop, a watchman’s place and an inner staircase. A part of the old lighthouse is now converted into a museum called Jawahar museum. The front end of the lighthouse is used for conducting various events throughout the year.

It is situated at Goubert Avenue, Beach Road, Pondicherry. It is in close proximity to the Rock beach which makes it an important site among all the places to visit in Pondicherry.

The Old Lighthouse remains open for all the weekdays except Mondays. So you can visit the place anytime throughout the year.
