How To Reach

By Train: Birur in Chikmagalur is the nearest Railway Station to the falls. From here, one can easily avail buses, taxis or auto rickshaws to arrive at the Falls, and the ride takes about 30 minutes. One can also take a taxi to the falls, which would be a quicker option.

By Air: Mangalore Airport is the nearest airport to the Kallathigiri Falls, and is located around 180 kilometers away. From here, one can avail direct buses to the Falls. Alternatively, one can also hire a cab or take a taxi here, although this option would be more expensive.

By Road: The Falls are well connected to all major cities and surrounding districts by road. It is located around 50 kilometres outside Chikmagalur, and it takes around 80 minutes driving time to arrive at the Falls from the main city.

Best Time To Visit

Kallathigiri Falls in Chikmagalur can be visited throughout the year. It is especially refreshing during the summer months, when the temperatures are towards the higher side. It is best avoided during the winter months between November to March, when the water can be extremely cold and hard to adjust to.

For the best experience at Kallathigiri, however, one should visit it during the Monsoon Months. During these months, the water is full and flowing fast, and one can enjoy a shower under the Falls.

History of Kallathigiri Falls

According to popular local legend, the site of the Kallathigiri Falls was a pilgrim site of the holy Saint Agastya, who chanced upon the falls during his wanderings and stayed here for quite a few months. The waterfall also houses the Veerabhadreshwara Temple, which was built during the Vijayanagara era. The temple entrance, characterized by a structure of three elephants, is proof of this, for elephants were characteristic of traditional Vijayanagara architecture. For this reason, the water from the falls is considered to be a holy by the locals. A three day annual fair is also held here every year in tribute to Lord Veerabhadr

1. The steps leading up to the falls may be slippery. One must make sure to wear suitable footwear while visiting the falls.

2. One must carry a change of clothes to change into after their dip at the falls.

3. The Falls are extremely crowded during religious festivals and public holidays.

4. Do not throw garbage or used bath items into the waters of the fall.

5. Make sure to avoid leech bites, as the trail is filled with them.

Trekking at Kallathigiri Falls

The Kallathigiri Falls is a popular destination for trekkers from around the world. The trekking begins from Tarikere, the base camp located 24 kilometers away from the Falls. Generally, the trek is not to steep or difficult, and can be enjoyed for both experts and beginners alike. The trail has two paths. One path begins at Tarikere and opens up directly next to the Falls. The other trail goes through the coffee plantations of Blue Mountains Estate. 

Usually, a guide is appointed to accompany the trekkers who opt for the latter option. The trekking trail becomes especially adventurous during the winter and monsoon months, when the trail becomes slippery, and is perfect for thrill-seekers. The trekking trails offers a splendid panoramic view of the rolling green mountains that surround the falls. As an additional perk, once at the top, trekkers can also take a dip in the waters from the Kallathigiri Falls after the tiring trek.
