The last week of year 2011, witnessed the temperatures plunging way below freezing point in Jammu and Kashmir and the Ladakh regions. The towns here experienced extreme weather conditions with the mercury dropping to minus 1.2 in Srinagar and as low as a freezing minus 17.8 in Leh town. This has been recorded as the lowest temperature so far this season.
Weather officials say that the weather condition is likely to remain and cold across the Kashmir valley and the Ladakh region for the next 5-6 days while a further drop can be expected during the night hours.
Owing to a small amount of fresh snowfall that the mountains received and light rain that lashed the plains, severe cold wave conditions have again started in the valley after a momentary respite for a couple of days early last week.
However, despite this chilling temperature and severe cold, there has not been much fall in the number of visitors to this scenic valley blessed with natural beauty as tourists layered in protective woolen clothing swarmed all around Kashmir anticipating snowfall as they get geared up to usher in the New Year.
