What is the Bermuda Triangle?
Commonly known as the Devil’s Triangle, this is a region situated in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and surface vessels reportedly disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
This area is one of the most heavily traveled shipping lanes in the world, with ships crossing through it daily towards ports in the Americas, Europe, and the Caribbean Islands. Plenty of cruise ships can also be spotted. It is also a regular route for commercial and private aircrafts that have their destination as Florida, the Caribbean, and South America. These unusual disappearances have been attributed to supernatural forces or activities by extraterrestrial beings.
Prior to it being named the Bermuda Triangle, this region was named as “Miami Triangle”. But with Florida objecting to this name reasoning that they would lose visitors to Miami with such name, it was changed to “Puerto Rico Triangle”. However, this time Puerto Rico objected. Finally it turned to the 21 square mile tiny island Bermuda and no one seems to have bothered about this region being named after this tiny island. Moreover, Bermuda’s other name was “Isle of the Devils” which fitted perfectly to the bermuda triangle mystery and therefore the final name “Bermuda Triangle” came up!
What is the Bermuda Triangle mystery?
However, the facts behind the reason for the disappearance of the ships and the aircrafts are far from the myths. There are many stories created through sheer imagination of writers who have written all sorts of bermuda mysteries in order to draw publicity to their books. In many cases, the facts got blurred.
As per the simplest of all definitions, Bermuda Triangle is located off the South-Eastern coast of US in the Atlantic Ocean. Miami (Florida), San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Bermuda (the north-Atlantic island) form the three ends of the triangle. The mysterious disappearances have taken place mostly between Florida and Puerto Rico forming the southern boundary of the triangle.
What really caused the ships and aircraft to disappear mysteriously in this area? Well, let us also have an insight of the most popular of the several theories attempting to solve bermuda triangle mystery behind the Bermuda Triangle.
Methane Gas in Bermuda Triangle: Methane gas trapped under the sea floor can erupt, thereby lowering the density of water and hence causing the ships to sink. Even the planes that are flying over it during this eruption can catch fire and get completely destroyed.
Compass Variation: As per the US Coast Guards, it is the incorrect compass adjustment that would have led to many ships and planes getting lost in the triangle. This theory is debatable.
Electronic Fog: It is observed that strange fog appears from nowhere and engulfs ships and planes flying over this area. These fogs cause instruments to malfunction and finally resulting in the vanishing of the ship or the aircraft.
Supernatural Theories:Some theorists believed it is nothing but the play of supernatural powers that reside around the Bermuda Triangle.
