Jyotirmayee Gives an Upvote to Solo Female Travellers For Ladakh

“Keep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.”  -John Muir

Jyotirmayee Mishra is a travel junkie. Having travelled to almost all corners of India, the only missing feather in her hat was visiting the Land of High Passes, Ladakh. So, this year, when she realized that she had an opportunity to travel to the magnificent land, she could not hold her excitement back and immediately roped in Thrillophilia to book a tour package for Ladakh.
Jyotirmayee likes to travel alone. Her travel tales are not limited to just India; she has been to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand as well. Until Ladakh remained unchecked on her bucket list, she was growing restless. Having initially planned to travel solo, Jyotirmayee was later joined by her mother after she insisted to come along, and that is how the mother-daughter duo was all set to roar in the soaring mountains!

Getting Leh’d

After a quaint, laidback stay in Srinagar for 4-5 days and excursion to the nearby regions, the duo was now headed to Ladakh via Zoji La.  While the altitude escalated, the surroundings started getting beautiful, and mountain peaks covered by snow were a frequent sight. She also indulged herself in the adventurous activity of river rafting on her way to Leh. While frequent snacks kept them entertained through the long route, the serene surroundings offered a gist of how beautiful their journey to Ladakh was going to be. Excited, the duo kept marching towards the bustling town of Leh, nestled in the mountains.

The ride to Leh was tiring, but it was an amazing experience for Jyotirmayee to find herself in the place she had always longed to visit. Accompanied by a group now, Jyotirmayee and her mother set off for sightseeing in Leh. They explored the markets laden with handicrafts and local items, which were flocked by a large number of tourists, keeping the streets busy. They also enjoyed a cultural programme there, which gave them an essence of the culture of Leh. She also wore a Ladakhi dress, which she recalls as one of the happiest moments of her journey.

Leh is popular for a number of Buddhist monasteries that it houses. These monasteries are a rich source of Buddhist learnings and preaching. The minimal artefacts spread divinity in the surroundings. The mother-daughter duo visited Sanchi Stupa to experience serenity, followed by a heritage visit to Leh Palace. After a tiring day of exploring the city, the duo headed to Nubra Valley.

Staying at the cottage in the cold, white desert in Nubra was a delightful experience for Jyotirmayee as the campfire flamed some good memories, laughter and delicious food at night along with the other travellers. She also made a lifelong friend in Monica, a tourist from Poland, with whom she shares an amazingly warm bond now. After a joyful chatter with everyone, she called it a day to prepare for the big upcoming one.

Highlights of the High-Altitude Sojourn

Jyotirmayee was the most excited to visit Pangong Tso. Having seen it in pictures, she was enchanted by the terrain which was uniquely picturesque, and it was time for her today to realise her dream of seeing it in front of her eyes. Excited, she, along with her mother, left for the picture-perfect salt water lake in Leh region. The route was majestic as high mountains and changing terrains enthralled the duo on their way to Pangong Tso.

Settled in a cosy camp opposite the lake, Jyotirmayee felt tranquillity near the lake like never before. The best moment of the trip, according to her, was looking at the blue waters of the lake which changed its hue frequently during the sunset. This is what Jyotirmayee had longed for, and now that she was finally here, she wanted to capture every frame of the lake in her heart. She couldn’t have enough of the serenity that the lake spread in its surroundings. “The first sight of the calming lake was unforgettable!” she describes her encounter with the lake as a moment she will remember forever. The night stay at Pangong Tso was an unparalleled experience; under the sky which housed a million starts smiling at Jyotirmayee, she experienced camping opposite the picturesque lake.

After an unforgettable experience in the lap of nature the previous night, it was time to say “goodbye” to Pangong Tso and “hello” to the high passes of Ladakh, which have formed its identity. They settled themselves in the cars to go through the adventurous journey of high passes and unparalleled surroundings. The air started getting thin, posing breathing problems to a few people in the car. However, Jyotirmayee thanks Thrillophilia for arranging oxygen cylinders in the car, which ensured that the journey remains smooth.

Scaling the mighty Khardung La was one of the most adventurous activities she had done in her life. It was a top-of-the-world feeling for her, literally as she posed for photographs to be captured as memories of visiting this undefeatable altitude (18380 feet!). Passing through the popular Magnetic Hill was an adventure as she saw the ending road touching the horizon, making her realise of the long journey she had to cover. Next up was the mighty Chang La, which is the second highest pass in Ladakh; having scaled it, she felt contented. For her, Ladakh had been an unforgettable journey of adventure blended with tranquillity and self-discovery

Solo Female Travellers’ Paradise

As she concludes her trip to the Land of High Passes, she makes a special mention to thank the people of Ladakh and praise their hospitality. “If a girl wants to travel solo to Ladakh, she can definitely do it without worrying much about her safety here. The people are welcoming and the place is a safe haven for girls,” she said, while wrapping up her travel tale.
