Yambong Singalila Trek

 

The Yambong Singalila Trek is one of the exceptional places on earth where the sight holds five peaks going up above 7000m, amid them Everest, Makalu and Lhotse of Nepal, Mt. Khangchendzonga, Mt. sinolchu in Sikkim. The trail passes on the narrow paths linked with Indo-Nepali border. Sometimes you will reach at the edge of the jungle, sometimes through rhododendron forests. Major attractions:

Dro-Drul Chorten: The most visited and magnificent holy stupa, Dro-Drul Chorten is situated near Gangtok. It was built in 1945. Bounded by two famous statues, this chorten has a gold plated spire.

Institute of Cottage Industry: This institute exhibits the elegant handicrafts and other miscellaneous articles, which include esoteric and hand-painted masks, batiks, alluring human figures, gleaming silk fibers, exceptional brocade. All these works are designed by prominent artists.

Zemu glacier: The largest and pictorial Zemu glacier is located at the base of the Kangchenjunga in the Sikkim Himalaya. It is one of the roots for the River Teesta.
How to get there:

By Air: Sikkim doesn’t have any airport, but the nearest Airport is Bagdogra (near Siliguri) in West Bengal, which lays only 125kms away from Gangtok the capital of Sikkim. Bagdogra linked with cities like Delhi and Kolkata.

By Road: Sikkim can be reached through northern areas of West Bengal. Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri are directly connected to Gangtok and other cities of the state. Avoid traveling during the monsoon seasons. Temporary problems may occur in monsoon.

By Rail: The nearest Railways Station is New Jalpaiguri (near Siliguri), which is linked with Gangtok. Gangtok has an extensive rail network with major Railway Stations in India, such as Kolkata, Delhi. It is also linked with the cities of Northeastern India like, Guwahati.
Places to visit nearby:

Nathula: Just 55 km from Gangtok, 'Nathula' Pass is set at an elevation of 14,200 ft. A soothing place of Sikkim is bounded by diverse alpine flora and fauna. This is one of the highest motorable routes.

Pemayangtse Monastery: It is settled over hill top at an elevation of 6840 ft. This monastery offers a striking panoramic view of the ranges of Himalaya and places around. Built in 17 century, it is one of the ancient monasteries in Sikkim.
Prerequisites/Facts/Suggestion:

• From the year 2000, the Sikkim government has made areas of Singalila Ridge accessible for trekking purposes. This has enabled the Singalila Traverse a longer but more interesting approach to Goechala Pass below Mt. Khangchendzonga base camp. On the traverse the delights of Himalayan upland trekking are there to enjoy, with exciting challenge of 5000 m high Goechala at the end.

• An added advantage is that the altitude gain is more gradual and there is plenty of time to acclimatize.

• This strenuous trek needs better physical fitness.

• Avoid trampling, follow trails, and do not pick plants or flowers.

• Do not smoke, drink or talk loudly, when you are in forest.

• Ensure that you are well equipped with warm clothes and trekking gears.

• Keep all waste materials away from lakes and streams.
