Spiti Trek is a mixture of Spitis rich cultural heritage and natural splendors. This region is out-of-the-way for most of the year due to snowed out mountain passes and extreme cold temperatures.
This trail provides an exclusive insight into the Spitian way of life. The traditional hospitality of the villagers provides the trekker a comfortable home environment including friendly faces. The best season to visit this trek is in Monsoon - July to September.
Our journey will take place from Delhi to Manali. On first phase; we will visit Manali - a famous hill station of Himachal. After this, while going further we will visit Langza, it has a famous temple called “Lang”. Staying in local homes will make your journey memorable.
After this we will visit Mulchey, meaning of the name ‘Mulchey’ is Battle chief. There are lots of unique spots close to this village. The two villages Lhalung and Saglung, reveal the customs of these villages. Moving further to Dhankar lake, is one of the most spectacular spots. Then we will get back to kaza, which is a district headquarter of Lahual-Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh.
Day 1:
On the very first day we will drive from Delhi to Manali, which takes 10-12 hrs.
Day 2:
Early in the morning, after having light food, we will go for Sight-Seeing around Manali. Manali is a small little hill station filled with tourists. We will start the day early with a drive on the left bank of the Beas to the village of Naggar, which is famous for the Russian artist Roerich’s gallery. Naggar also has a famous castle and the views around the area are spectacular. We will be back to Manali and move further to Solang, which is the paragliding and skiing zone of the area. After this, we will drive back to Manali to stay at night in the hotel where we can have our dinner.
Day 3:
On third day we will drive to Kaza (3686m) - a run of 8-9 hrs.
Day 4:
On this day a run of an hour will take us to Langza. This day is relatively easy day in order to acclimatize us to the altitude. There is no need to wake up early on this day. We can start after a leisurely breakfast and reach Langza by noon to visit to the Lang (temple), before lunch. The Lang is regarded to be the headquarters of all the deities of the valley and houses some old frescos and thankas (paintings on silken canvas). Relish your dinner and stay overnight in the homestays.
Day 5:
From Langza, we will move to Jureley. It is a journey of around 5 to 6 hrs. Here, it is wise to start early as it’s the first day of trekking and should be taken gradually. This track traverses along a natural vestige center with the opportunity to spot some rare remnants of Spiti’s geological history. The trail runs equivalent to the stunningly striking Pasham Range with the peaks of Chau Chau Khang Nilda and Chau Chau Khang Namo forming a striking backdrop. Besides a host of floral variety, we will find blue sheeps around.
Day 6:
A 4 to 5 hrs run will take us to Mulchay. The track slowly breezes itself over pasturelands. The day can be spent marveling at the magnificence and imposing stature of the grazing yaks and horses. The night is spent camping at a summer settlement of the villagers.
Day 7:
On seventh day we will move to Demul (4357m) – a run of 2 to 3 hrs. As soon as we leave Mulcahy, there is a sagacity of eagerness that builds before approaching Demul. It is located in one of the most remote areas of Spiti, this village has a very attention-grabbing legend associated with its foundation. After a warm lunch in a homestay, there are lots of unique spots close to this village which shouldn’t be missed. The village guides are a good source of information for not only the places but also the inimitable history surrounding this village.
Day 8:
On this day we will move to Lhalung, it is a journey of 4 to 5 hrs. This route goes downhill. We will have our lunch at a village called Saglung, housing all of 2 houses. This village is amazingly picturesque and for a minute it’s hard to believe one is in a cold desert. The oldest temple and possibly one of the oldest trees (dating back to over a 1000 years) in Spiti are famous here.
Day 9:
A 4-5 hrs drive will take us to Dhankhar. This route winds itself along the road for a while before a gradual ascent up the mountain side brings one to one of most picturesque spots in Spiti. Dhankhar Lake has its own story to tell cradled in the lap of stark mountains reflecting heaven and earth in its crystal clear waters. Packed lunch can be had here and thereafter a steep descent brings one to the ancient capital of Spiti. Sketched along stone-mud pillars and cliffs, it’s hard to describe Dhankhar as words are inadequate for this village, balanced precariously amidst geological relics.
Day 10:
Then after on this day, in morning we will visit Kaza which takes 1 hr 30 mins. We can spend the morning visiting the old & new monasteries, the remains of the Dhankhar Fort and a museum of cultural artifacts. In homestay we will have your lunch. Get back to Kaza after taking lunch.
