Skiing at Auli

 

Auli is tucked into the snow laden Garhwal Himalayas. It is amongst the well known skiing resorts of India. The skiing slopes here are good enough for international comparisons. The innate grandeur of coniferous high elevation vegetation adds appeal to the slopes of Auli. Auli promises the skiers a thrilling experience. Skiers at Auli enjoy 20 km of smooth, cascading and absolutely fantabulous slopes. The geographic set up of the Auli mountains provide the skiers with chances to go cross-country or try either slalom or down-hill events. It also exhibits an all round scene of the Himalayas from up close. The skiers can delight in being onlookers of the popular Himalayan mountain-tops like , Kamet (7, 756 m), Mana Parvat (7, 273 m) and Dunagiri (7, 066 m).

How to get there:

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, situated at a distance of about 24 km from the main Rishikesh town. Air is not the preferred mode of transport for getting into the town.

By Road: Road network is well connected to all major towns of Uttaranchal and surrounding areas.

By Rail: Rishikesh is linked to all the major towns and cities of India. Some of the links are accessible only from Haridwar. From here you need to take a bus to national highway no 58.
Places to visit nearby:

Joshimath: Joshimath is a well known tourist spot and centre of pilgrimage. It has a tourist bungalow, and dharamshalas. It is the main source to reach valley of flowers. Visit the markets of Joshimath, and rest there in forest rest houses or in Gurudwara.

Gusro Bugyal: Around 3 km from Auli, Gusro Bugyal is vast grassland that is set in woodland of oak and conifer. It is placed at an elevation of 3056 meters above sea level.

Saildhar Tapovan: It is about 15 km from Joshimath. A tiny settlement has many hot water springs.

• Skiing in Auli is a thrilling experience not to be missed.

• Skiing equipments include the most modern alpine skis, Nordic skis, gloves and goggles.

• Skiing gear is available on hire.

• Other attractions like cable car rides and rope lifts, outdoors building snowmen, or having snowball fights.

Best time to visit: December to February

Things to carry:

• Keep extra pair of clothes and sunglasses.

• Take medications such as inhalers, bee-sting kits, insulin and first aid box etc.

• Bring woolen clothing's, cap, socks, dark glasses, gloves, mufflers, pullovers, wind-proof jacket, gum/snow boots and a torch light in their travel kit.

• Microwave telephones, wireless sets and walkie-talkies are available as communication in Auli.
