Founded in 1984, this park is situated in Palghat district. It occupies an area of 89.2 sq km. The Kunthi river valley is close by. It is approximately 180 km from Cochin and 40 km from Mannarkkad. The park is made up of evergreen rain forest. The greenery along the jungles deepest cores is breath taking and a sight to remember for the visitors. This park is also known locally as Sairandhrivanam. The remoteness of the park has resulted in very little human intervention in this park. It is surrounded by Attappadi Reserve Forests in the east, and dense jungles of Palghat and Nilambur in the west and south respectively.
The Wildlife here has 100 species of butterfly, Ceylon frogmouth, 400 species of moths, the nilgiri laughin thrush, nilgiri langur, Great Indian Hornbill, the lion-tailed Macaque, the giant Malabar squirrel, Nilgiri langur, tiger, leopard, elephant, sambar, pit viper, wild bear, nilgai, etc.
You will also find 966 varieties of flowers and 100 orchids’ plants. This is apart from the large variety of animals and birds found here. The USP of this place are large hollow trees where in people can easily sit and enjoy themselves.
Day 01:
Start your day with a hearty breakfast. Reach the park and check into a resort. You start your trekking where you end up at Sairandhiri which is 23 km from Mukkali. If you wish to go further you need to take trekking permissions from the Kerala forest dept. The trek from Sairandhiri to Poochappara takes 2 hours and is 7 km long. Return by evening, relax and have dinner at night. Stay the night in the hotel.
Day 02:
Today after breakfast you start your return journey back home.
