Leh is India's bond with the striking past, when long caravans plied the ancient Silk Route and lingered long in Leh to rest, to buy, to plan, or just to visit. What Hong Kong is to the Far East, Leh was to central Asia in the ancient times. Situated at the summit of a triangular plateau formed by the Indus at an altitude of 3368m, it is a small town of narrow intersecting lanes leading to the old palace of the Rajah of Ladakh. This safari also takes you to the largest inland lake of the Indian Sub Continent, Tsomoriri Lake.
Ladakh is the most remote region of India; a barren, virtually rainless area. Ladakh beckons for more than one reason. The defiance of its barren landscape is its unique flora and fauna, its culture, its clear blue skies and clean air, the land where snow never melts and only corn ripens.
The journey starts from Manali driving through the lush green and foggy Rohtang Pass (3980 m). The landscape surprisingly changes into the rugged brown of the rain shadow area of Lahaul. The setting changes into desert after crossing a few villages of Lahul with prayer flags on their roofs. We will cross Taklang La pass at 5330m to arrive at Rumtse and Gya village. An hour’s drive from Runtse will take us to Upshi where we will corss Indus river and enter Indus Valley with dotted villages on its bank and beautiful monasteries built on the hill side.
