Likir to Temisgam Trek

This classic trek is also called the "Baby Trek" because of the easy and mild hiking conditions. Starting from Likir, one passes through several villages among the richest in Ladakh and its worth visiting the monasteries of Likir, Ridzong and Tingmosgam on the way.

This is the trek that can be done throughout the year, as the passes are not very high and don't get snow-blocked during the winter. This is one of the easy Treks in Ladakh, where one does not need a tent. It leads through historical villages with stupas, mani walls, chortens and small gompas. In July the noon temperature crosses 30 degree Celsius.

Trekking in Ladakh is said to be ‘trouble-free’ from Likir to Temisgam. One can look forward to a very enjoyable trek; easy to start for those who are short on time. It starts a little to the west of Leh in the rich village of Likir, and cross several low passes with pretty villages in between. One gets to see the ancient spiritual monasteries. In fact Ladakh itself has a very pleasant landscape and life-style.

Start walking early in the morning, take a break at noon and continue again around 3 pm. One will meet people working in their fields; enjoy beautiful landscapes with villages like oasis in the desert.
Day 01:

The journey will start with a drive on a rough motorable road from Leh to Likir (60km) and Trekking up to 5-6 hrs in Yangthang. Walking down south from Likir Monstary will lead us to Hemis Shukpachan. The track is quite scenic and is surrounded by wheat fields. An easy ascend, leads to the top of a small pass, Chagaste La (3700 meters).
We will get down to Saspotse village after crossing a small stream. Then there is a track behind the village through a small ravine which takes you to Phobe La (3849 mts) from where we can have a sight of Yangthang village. The base camp is right at the village base.

Day 02:

On the 2nd day of trekking, we will plan out the Trek to Uley Phu. It is a Trek from Yangthang to Uley Fhu (pasture). It takes 5 hrs to reach there. Keep Trekking along the road till it meets the river at the valley bottom after half an hour. We will walk along the stream for another 20 minutes and then cross the river to the west facing slope. Initially the track climbs abruptly for half an hour and gets steadier as you move towards the tiny hamlet of Uley. The camp is situated at a height of 4200 meters.

Day 03: Trek to Hemis Shukpachan – which requires 5 hrs.

We will trek down along the same path going past the Uley settlement. As the path descend to the river, we will detour to the promontory on the right where it turns into another valley running North West to South east. This valley leads to a small hermit hut based at the foot of a hill. The trail then ascends steeply to the pass at the top, at a height of 4350 meters. From the pass we can enjoy majestic views of the Hemis-Shukpachen village with Zanskar Mountains to the south. Descend gradually to the camp site amidst barley fields in the village. You can stay overnight in the tents.

Day 04: Trek to Temisgam 5-6 hrs.

After completing trouble-free stroll for an hour, we will find Meptak La (3720 mts). The “Ang village” is there. We have to cross a watercourse and reach Tia village. Trekking further, we will find the village of Temisgam. Take a short drive to Lamayuru via Khaltse. This would be our camping site for the night.

Day 05: Visit to Lamayuru Monaestry

An early morning visit to the Lamayuru monastery is mesmerizing. All of us can choose to enjoy the morning rituals. A drive back to Leh through the scenic villages of Rizong, Alchi, Basgo, Phyang & Spituk would definitely make our day.
