Khangchendzonga Trek

 

Among the Sikkim's Treks, most popular trek is the foot of Mt. Kangchenjunga, the 3rd highest peak in the world.Though the view of Kanchandzonga chains is enjoyed from various viewpoints, but the most beautiful view to these mountains is from Dzongri & Gochila (4800m).The panoramic views of the peaks and Himalayan ranges will rejuvenate you both physically as well as mentally. In this trek, we will hear nothing but the whistle of the wind, soothing sound of brooks flowing down the hills, songs of birds in different tunes, shrilling crickets & sometimes, the whistling “Lepchas” or Tibetan yak herder.

 

This trek starts from Yoksum to Goecha La Pass, at 5000m. A lush countryside of subtropical forests, rhododendron forests, alpine meadows where the Yaks graze in high valleys surrounded by glaciers and snow capped peaks of the Khangchendzonga range.

 

Kanchandzonga trek is one of the perfect trekking landscapes in India. This trek starts from Bagdogra to Goecha La. The best season is April-June & the October-December period. Trek ends at Phuentsoling in Bhutan or at Bhadrapur airport in Nepal. Glaciers and snow capped peaks of the Khangchendzonga range overlooking the pristine Himalayan environment. It is the homeland of three different tribes, namely the indigenous Lephcas, Nepalese & Bhutias.

Day 01:

 

We start from Bagdogra to Gangtok. At the airport of Bagdora, we will meet by the representatives. A 4 hour drive to Gangtok covers 125 kilometers. Overnight stay is at Gangtok.

 

Day 02: In Gangtok

 

After having breakfast, our full day will be spent in sight seeing in and around Gangtok including the famed Rumtek monastery, Enchey Monastery, Research Institute of Tibetology, Dodrul Chorten, Flower Show and Cottage Industries. Trekking permission has to be taken on this day. Overnight stay is at Gangtok.

 

Day 03: Gangtok –Yuksom

 

Take our breakfast and drive to Yuksom via Rabangla. It is a 140 kilometer journey, covered in 6 hours. Yuksome is at 1700 meters above sea level. In Yuksom you will visit the site of first Chogyal (Monarch) of Sikkim’s enthronement. Then you will be transferred to your lodge for overnight stay.

 

Day 04: Yuksam- Tsokha

 

This trek begins through rice wood hills with rich abundance of flora and fauna. It passes through forests rich in Oak, Spruce, Chestnut, Fir, Pines, Giant Magnolias and Rhododendron. It’s a botanist’s paradise. It provides us an opportunity to spot a large species of exotic of birds, butterflies and orchids which enchant the nature lovers. A four hours walk on a path lined with tall trees, brings us to Bakhim. After an hour we will be at Tshoka, a small village for overnight camp. (Distance of 16 km from Yuksom to Tshoka)

 

Day 05: Tsokha - Dzongri (4, 550m or 13,221 ft)

 

This trek is about 8 kilometers and six hours away from Dzongri. It shows us the ways to get closer to the world’s third largest peak, the legendary Kanchenjunga. The sight at dawn and dusk tinted in softest hues is permanently etched in the trekker’s mind. The hillsides of Dzongri are painted in all colors of the rainbow as different varieties of flowers are in bloom. There we can stay in a camp at night.

 

Day 06 : Excursion Dzongri La & Rathong Valley

 

This trail heads to the Dzongri La (at 4550 meters). It passes through the west of Kabur Peak. The two hour trek, with a steady pass, is rewarded by outstanding views across Rathong Glacier. This trek brings you to the spectacular peaks of Rathong Valley. The trail then leads downwards to the valley before coming back to Dzongri. The trail is tricky to follow in places.

 

Day 07: Dzongri-Thangsing (3,930 meters or 12,467 feet)

 

The 7 kilometer and 4 hr. trek from Dzongri starts through lush green pastures and valleys. It leads into the beautiful valley situated at the base of Jupono peak. One has to cross a wooden bridge over the stream to reach the camping grounds in the giant valley.

 

Day 08: Thangsing-Chemathang

 

This trek of 4,800 meters or 15,748 feet is situated at the base of the grand Pandim, Chemathang is 8 kilometers from Thangsing and takes around 6 hours to trek.

 

Day 09: Chemathang - Goecha La (4,940 meters) - Chemathang

 

This trek is much higher and steeper in comparison with other treks. The Goecha La is about 5-km and takes to cover. This is the northernmost and highest point of the trek.

 

Day 10:


On this day of return journey, we will find rare birds which are found only on the high altitude, the occasional sight of blue sheep roaming in the wilderness.

 

Day 11:

 

This day is reserved for taking rest at Thansing.

 

Day 12: Thansing - Dzongri

 

We will trek from Thansing to Dzongri through Rhododendron forests to the camping site. We will take a side trip to Chowrithang, (4,380 meters or 14,370 feet) which takes eight-hours. There is the base camp of Himalayan Mountaineering Institute of Darjeeling. It is famous for the training of would be mountaineers. The panoramic views of Frey, Koktang, Kabru, Ratong, Chandra Peak and the Kabru dome are seen from here.

 

A two-hour walk from Chowrithang along the glacier leads to the Houe-Chu Lake, which has the special feature of its milky water. After this, we move from Chowrithang to Bakhim. There is a Zamling Gaon, named after Tenzing's son, a good place to rest in the journey.

 

Day 13: Dzongri - Bakhim via Jamlingthang (Zamling Gaon)

 

This route passes through one of the most dramatic forest areas of Sikkim in the fragrance of magnolias, which looks more beautiful in the spring when the giant Rhododendron are in full bloom.

 

Day 14: Bakhim -Yuksom

 

We will have a leisurely walk for about four hours, which brings you back to Yuksom.

 

Day 15: Yuksome to Darjeeling

 

We will take a drive to Darjeeling via Peshok Tea Gardens. Here we will be transferred to hotel for overnight stay.

 

Day 16: Darjeeling

 

Early morning after having our breakfast, we will drive to Tiger Hill to see the glorious views of Sunrise. While coming back we will visit the Yiga Choling Monastery and War Memorial. Then, we will also visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Zoological Park, and Tibetian Self Help Centre. We are free to visit the local market and the "Chowrasta" Mall in evening. Night stay is at the hotel.

 

Day 17: Darjeeling- Bagdogra Airport

 

On the last day of our journey, we will move to Bagdogra Airport for onward Journey.
