Kalindi Pass - The Glacial Traverse

 

Connecting the two holy shrines of Gangotri and Badrinath, this trail traverses from one glacier to the other to cross the high pass of Kalindi just under 6000m. The walk is mostly over the ground and the snow fields with deep cracks and gives great opportunities to view the high altitude wildlife and camp by some small glacial lakes. Walking at an average altitude of 4500m for about 10 days and sleeping at freezing temperatures during this trip is a lot more than a trek.

Also this trek through the Kalindi Pass is advised for adventurous and fit trekkers who possess a fundamental ability of high altitude Trekking and mountaineering. It is a rare experience indeed. The mention of Kalindi Pass trek gives thrills even to the most seasoned climbers. This trip involves visit to two of the most important pilgrimage for Hindus in India. Trekking to the source of the most important living goddess of India and to the heart of Great Himalayas to the base of highest peaks and negotiating high passes.

Day 1 : Delhi to Uttarkashi (6 hours)

A drive from Delhi to Haridwar will take 6 hours. On reaching Haridwar board the waiting vehicle to take 7 hour drive to Uttarkashi. Spend the night camping.

Day 02: Drive Uttarkashi to Gangotri (3000m), 4-5 hrs

After a relaxed breakfast, we will drive 4-5 hrs to the pilgrim town of Gangotri. The drive gets picturesque as one approaches the village of Sukhi. As one reaches Gangotri, the glimpses of snow capped peaks become more and more visible.

Day 03 : Trek Gangotri to Chirbasa (3600m) 4 hrs

Take a visit to the temple and set on for a 4 hour walk up towards Gaumukh, the source of the river Ganges. The trail runs parallel to the river and just at a short distance from Chirbasa one gets the first views of the Bhagirathi Peaks. Chirbasa (3600m), literally meaning the home of pine is now a cluster of shops and some pine trees. Walk down from the main trail and setup camp close to the river.

Day 04 : Trek Chirbasa to Gaumukh(4000m) 4-5hrs

The trail runs along the valley and crosses the Bhojbasa(3800m), home of birch (now only a few left in the much denuded area. Move further and camp close to the snout of the Gangotri Glacier.

Day 05 : Trek Gaumukh-Nandanvan (4505m) 5-6hrs

The pastures of Nandanvan at the base of Bhagirathi group of peaks are the destination places after the long hike. The highlight of this camp is that it offers majestic views of Shivling - the Matterhorn of the Himalayas.

Day 06 : Trek Nandanvan-Vasukital (4900m) 6-7hrs.

One can expect to walk along beautiful stream of water and enjoy the picturesque views of Meru and Bhrigupanth. After 5kms, one bypasses the outlet of the valley leading towards Bhagirathi and comes to a deep narrow steep sided valley eroded by the glacier. From here, descend diagonally towards the snout of the lateral glacier to reach Vasukital. Camping near the lake at the foot of the North-west ridge of Vasuki Parbat is a favorable option.

Day 07 : Rest day at Vasukital

This day is to rest & rejuvenate oneself. This helps one to acclimatize and get ready for the tougher terrains and crossing the high pass

Day 08 : Trek Vasukital to Kharapathar (5115m) 4-5 hrs

The entire day is spent hiking and trekking. The path is coarse, over stony rubble and crowing moraines. Camping follows later on.

Day 09 : Trek Kharapathar to Sweta Glacier (5500m) 4-5 hrs

Today we again follow a long trek where-in the end is marked by setting up a camp at a small campsite by the Sweta Glacier.

Day 10 : Trek Sweta Glacier to Kalindi Pass Base

Return back to the base camp and prepare to move to a different route.

Day 11 : Trek Kalindi Pass Base camp to Rajparav(4910m) 4-5 hrs

An early startin the morning to climb the Kalindi Pass (5967m). The trek back to the camp is through snow fields.

Day 12 : Trek Rajparav – Arwatal (3900m) 5-6 hrs

Moving on the side of an icefall, the route comes down to a small lake. From here, we go to Arwatal. Kamet and its neighbours are visible. Stay at the camp for the night.

Day 13 : Trek Arwatal-Ghastoli (3790m) 5-6hrs.

Walk down to Arwa nalla with its profusion of wild flowers. Spend the rest of the day camping at Ghastoli.

Day 14 : Trek Ghastoli-Mana (3135)-Badrinath (3100m) 5-6 hours

This is a return drive of 2 kms to the hotel in Badrinath.

Day 15 : Badrinath-Pipalkoti(1330m) 4-5 hrs

Visit the legendary temple of Badrinath(3100m) and drive 4 hours to Pipalkoti. Overnight stay is in a hotel.

Day 16 : Pipalkoti – Delhi

After an early morning breakfast set out for the 8 hr drive to reach Haridwar. In the evening board the train to Delhi.
