Hampta Pass

 

Hampta Pass is one of the most interesting treks that provide you with amazing lush green valleys, tall snow covered mountains and barren hills with surrealistic forms and shapes. This trek will take you to above the foothills of the Himalaya, the Pir Pangal Range, crossing at Hamta Pass (4,268 m) to finally arrive at the remote Lahaul. After Manali Valley, the trek traverses across Prini through forests of walnut, oak and the occasional alder. Trail passes through lush green high altitude pastures to a beautiful camp site at Chikha (3270 m). Chikha is dotted with wild flowers and a few waterfalls. Continue to walk till next camp at Bhalu ka Dera located at the base of the Hampta Pass. It is possible to trek in monsoon when you can enjoy seeing the wild flowers blossom. The local people of Lahaul are Buddhists and follow the Dalai Lama. Earliest sights of the Chandra Valley and Lahaul await you on this day. After crossing two rivers you get to Chatru which is on the start of the road and is the end of this trek. Trek Grade: Moderate

Major attractions:

Hadimba Devi Temple: This temple has 24 m high tower. It is dedicated to the wife of Bhim. A fair is held every year during Sravan in the remembrance of King Bahadur Singh. The undecorated walls of mud-covered stonework contrast with the wooden doorway are the main attractions of this temple.

Shea Gahru: The land of snow, Himachal has the beautiful place called Shea Gahru. It literally entails “very chilly place”.

Chandratal Lake: Chandratal Lake offers a pleasant panorama of the Lahaul range, and the peaks like Minar(6172 m), Talagiri(6279 m), Tara Pahar(6227 m) and Mulkila (6517 m).

By Air

The nearest airport for Lahaul-Spiti is Bhuntar, 50 km (Approx.) from Manali.

By Rail

The nearest Railway Station for Lahaul-Spiti is at Chandigarh (310 km) and Ambala (355 km).



By Road

Chandigarh to Manali is 320 Km & Journey duration is 14 Hrs. You have a choice to catch Volvo/deluxe buses from Delhi or Chandigarh or hire a cab/ private taxi to reach Kullu-manali.
Places to visit nearby:

Prini village: It is situated around three kilometers from Manali on the left bank road to Kullu. The picturesque village was made prominent by our former Prime minister, Bajpayee.

Keylong: Set in the fertile valley of Bhaga, Keylong is the headquarters of the Lahaul sub-district.
Prerequisites/Facts/Suggestion:

• Camping is done on pre-defined campsites near source of water.

• The maximum height gained here is 13500 feet.

• Good level of fitness as well as previous experience of trekking would be beneficial before you set on this trek.

• This trek requires no technical climbing equipments accept ropes.

• While trekking in this area, do not dirty the surrounding places.

Best time to visit: June to October
