Green Lake is located at the base camp of Mount Khanchendzonga on the Zemu Glacier in North Sikkim. It is a splendid walk with the variety of flowers like rhododendrons, blue poppies and primulas all in bloom. The mountain views are an out of the world experience with an amphitheater of the peaks with Khanchendzonga at the head of the valley.
Known to be one of the most captivating of all treks in this area, the trek to Green Lake, at the base of Mt. Kanchendzonga on the Zemu glacier in North Sikkim is enchanting. Day 1: Bagdogra - Gangtok (1547 meters)
Our arrival at the Bagdogra airport is followed by a 4 hour drive to Gangtok along the river Teesta, passing through the Sikkim-Bengal border town of Rangpo will take you to the hotel. Our overnight stay will be at the hotel in Gangtok.
Day 2: Gangtok
We will take a tour of the Gangtok city, which includes the famous Rumtek Monastery, Enchey Monastery, and Institute of Tibetology. Our overnight stay is at Gangtok.
Day 3: Gangtok–Lachen (2700 meters)
The drive to Lachen takes 6 - 7 hours from Gangtok. This will be covered by jeep along the North Sikkim highway. Our overnight stay is at Lachen.
Day 4: Lachen – Jakthang (3300 meters)
We will continue to follow the main North Sikkim highway to Thangu and reach the junction of Lachen Chu and Zemu Chu at Zema. After crossing Zemu Chu, we proceed westward up the Zemu valley to pursue a trail through the forest. Before Jakthang, the path crosses Lhonak Chu. Jakthang is situated in a small meadow where we camp for the night. The trek takes 5-6 hours approximately.
Day 5: Jakthang – Yabuk (3850 meters)
The 4 -5 hours trek to Yabuk, climbs through dense forest and after three hours of steady walking we reach the edge of Zemu Glacier; which is usually by lunch time. Overnight stay is at the camp for acclimatization.
Day 6: Yabuk- Rest Camp (4500 meters)
From here on, the trek follows Zemu glacier. The 4 – 5 hour trail is mainly over boulders and in parts is indefinite. The Zemu Chu rushes through the glacier and as the valley widens the great peaks come into view. The rest camp is situated right opposite Siniolchu and it has an extraordinary view of one of the most beautiful mountains in Sikkim. Blue sheep and the Bharal are often sighted on the hills opposite the Rest Camp. We need to walk slowly as the air gets thinner and acclimatization becomes essential.
Day 7: Rest Camp - Green Lake (5050 meters)
This 3-4 hour trek, from Rest Camp ascends gently up the valley. The walk will be usually slow because of the altitude. The twin peaks of Siniolchu and Simvo, and Mt. Kanchendzonga are some of the giants that dominate the horizon. The camp is on a grassy flat known as the Green Lake Plain, the name derived from a small pond at the eastern end where on a clear morning the reflection of the Mt. Kanchendzonga is visible in the water. Overnight stay is at the Camp.
Day 8: Rest day at the Green Lake
We will spend the day basking in the sunshine, watching the peaks. The hill behind the camp which is an hour’s walk, is a perfect point to see the wonderful view of the Kanchendzonga and the valley below. Zemu Pass that links the Zemu valley to the Talung valley is clearly seen from this high point. Our overnight stay is at the camp.
Day 9: Green Lake - Yabuk
The trek, of around 4 -5 hours, gets us back to Yabuk and is much easier because it is mostly downhill. Our overnight stay is a Camp.
Day 10: Yabuk- Jakthang-Zema
A 5 -6 hour trek to Jakthang. Overnight stay is at Camp.
Day 11: Zema - Lachen
A 5 hour drive gets you to Lachen. We will transfer to the hotel for overnight stay.
Day 12: Lachen- Gangtok
We will drive from Lachen to Gangtok to end the Trek, thereby completing the onward journey.
