Corbett National Park

 

Jim Corbett National Park, which is located in the foothills of Himalayas, is named after the hunter turned conservationist Jim Corbett. He played a key role in the establishment of this park.

Dense moist deciduous forest mainly consists of sal, haldu, pipal, rohini and mango trees, and these trees cover almost 73 per cent of the park. The 10 per cent of the area consists of grasslands.

It houses around 110 tree species, 50 species of mammals, 580 bird species and 25 reptile species. The endangered Bengal tiger of India resides here. This Wildlife Sanctuary of India was the first to come under Project Tiger initiative.

In the north, it’s bounded by the Kanda ridge. The terrain is mountainous and falls in the Shivalik and Outer Himalaya geological region.The Ramganga glides through from east to the west in this reserve, and rivulets add to the natural charm of this Park.


Flora: A total of 488 different species of plants have been recorded in the park. Some of the main species recorded here are Sal, Khair, Sissoo, Ber, Kuthber, Bel, Chbilla, Dhak, Semal, Khingan, Kharpat, Rohini, Bakli, Pula and Bamboo.

Fauna: Around 33 species of reptiles, 7 species of amphibians, about 7 species of fish and 37 species of dragonflies have also been recorded.

Mammals: Tiger, Leopard, Elephant, Cheetal , Sambar , Hog Deer, Barking Deer , Wildboar Langoor and Rhesus Monkey.

Reptile: Indian Marsh Crocodiles Or Mugger, Gharials , King Cobra, Common Krait , Cobra, Russel , Python and Monitor Lizard .

Pisces: Mahaseer , Kalimuchi , Kalabasu , Chilwa and Goonch.

Avian-Fauna: Peacock, Jungle Fowl, Partridges, Kaleej, Crow, Vulture, Parakeets, Laughing Thrush, Orioles, King Fishers, Drongo, Doves, Woodpeckers, Ducks, Teals, Storks, Cormorants and Seagulls .

Major Attractions:

Elephant Safari: The ride on this majestic animal is one of the major attractions of Corbett National Park. Sitting on an elephant, like a royal, you go into the grasslands and jungles looking for tigers or a herd of wild elephants. Two times a day, Elephant safaris are arranged that starts from Dhikala—early morning and late afternoon.

Corbett National Park is situated in Ramnagar in the district of Nainital (Uttaranchal).

Area: 521 sq. km

Route: The town of Ramnagar is the headquarters of Corbett Tiger Reserve. There are overnight trains available from Delhi to Ramnagar. Also, there are trains from Varanasi via Lucknow to Ramnagar. Reaching Ramnagar, one can hire a taxi to reach the park and Dhikala.

Ramnagar is also well connected by road with Lucknow, Nainital, Ranikhet, Haridwar, Dehradun and New Delhi. One can also drive from Delhi (295 km) via Gajraula, Moradabad, Kashipur to reach Ramnagar.

Best Time to Visit: Mid-November to Mid-June.

Other Places to Visit:

Dhikala: This well-known destination in Corbett is situated at the fringes of Patli Dun valley. There is a rest house here which was built hundred of years ago. Kanda ridge forms the backdrop, and from Dhikala, one can enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of the valley.

Garjia Temple: It’s located on the banks of river Kosi, nearly 14 km away from Ramnagar City. At the time of Kartik Poornima, a fair is held here. The temple is dedicated to Garjia Devi.

• Park is open from November 15th to June 15th.
• Prior permit is required to enter the Park
